I might be interested in a mobo and 4 proc's... suppose I'll see when we get that quote for the mobos.

And what of ram? I mean if we're buying bulk mobos and processors to get bulk deals, can't we get bulk ram as well? I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd need ram for this build. I can get ram at cost from my work, although if we could get a bulk order of it for cheaper, it could be worth our while.

heatsinks are, if i am right, just about any amd one. it should fit 939/940/am2/am3/socket F .. but i might be wrong, i just googled it and fund someone saying it.

Bolt-thru heatsinks for socket 754/939/1207 will work. If you have some 754/939 retention frames and are willing to mod them a little, then clip-on heatsinks for 754/939/am2 will also work.

Basically the bolt spacing on these boards is the same as socket 754/939 (3.5"). Some Socket F boards come with 4.1" spacing, which will _not_ work with standard a64 heatsinks. But usually boards have both sets of holes, and the 3.5" (standard) backplate. I beleive this arima falls into this category [EDIT: looking at the picture, no it doesn't. Just standard 3.5" spacing...].

I agree but considering I had to drop him several emails to request a price drop and that he initially was not open to negotiate price it´s quite a success although it´s not the prettiest price I would love to have

the board is 75 each if we get up to 50 pieces. cpus are through me, and is 27,5$ each for 8347, its a 1.9ghz quadcore cpu, you need 4 of them ofc.


btw Duh, i would like 4 boards, as i have already brought 16 cpus from my contact. and as fast as possible

shait 4 boards that´s a brave dude. .. lovin it ( I would buy all the stock If I did not have the med school braking my ba.. 24/7 ).. with the dirt cheap electric ( summed to the large abandoned deposit with tri fasic electric and 5 meters roofs which make it a naturally cool place to place some servers) we have down here I could do a very serious damage ..

adding you for sure to the list ( I´ve already read about your 16 x buy and that was making me a bit anxious as we need to fill the 50 units ..I did not comment due to lack of time.. had some medical visits to check my back as I had a car accident some time ago)

gotcha shoota, I will slowly start to make ( in a gdoc and will share it to those who buy a board) it so I can have it baked when we finally buy this bunch of mobos.

we need to have a US guy ( who is trusted by the community that can receive the boards and ship them). if the guy could test them out just in case one of them has a DOA socket and the buyer is in the arse of the world .

great ideas. i'd be willing to test them but only if i have a detailed sheet. i won't be too busy this next couple of months. of course if there is someone more knowledgeable with these boards then by all means they can do it.

i'm still trying to save up enough money to be able to get these lol. i'm also wondering if it wouldn't be more prudent to go with a thuban/i7 setup. have we come to a conclusion about the ppd/watt of this quad socket platform?

Yep they're fine.

In terms of modding, you will just need to trim/ cut away a bit of the retention frame on 1 side so it doesnt interfere with the socket lever. Can be done with scissors.

Also, you won't need to use the backplate, just the top-side retention bracket. Socket F has its own metal retention bracket and people have reported problems using other ones because they are missing the 4 screws that fasted down the socket 'lid'. So you just screw in the stock (modded) retention bracket onto the board as it comes.

edit: they look like brand new cpu. they are realy pristine looking. but i dont have board to test for doa yet.
will try and find a cheap dual board to do testing on.

I am a long time lurker, first time poster. I am a huge WCG enthusiast and learned much of what I know about WCG and BOINC from this site.

I am interested in getting one of these 16 core monsters up and running but I have some questions and concerns. There used to be a thread here called "el cheapo 4x4" or something like that but could not find it. I think the answers to a couple of my questions lies in that thread but I guess it was moved to a different part of the forum as I can no longer find it. My questions are as follows:

1. What is the extent to which the PSU must be modified in order to correctly supply power to the board? Does this require any special tools? Can it be done by someone with little experience soldering?
2. Can it be done with only one PSU? And what are the PSU requirements? I assume the +12V power requirements are significant as each CPU is rated at 95W.
3. Is the board picky about memory? I know we must use DDR2 Reg ECC but do they have to be a certain speed with certain timings?
4. Will 4Gb (4x1GB) of RAM total be enough?
5. OS? I remember vaguely from the old thread that a member got the board to work with linux. Can we use any linux or only specific distros? Did anyone find a way to load Windows? (I have server 2008 R2)
6. What happens if I have issues with the board I get? I don't want to be stuck with $300-$400 worth of hardware that I can't use because of one bent socket pin.

I think that thread got lost in a server outage a while back. Make sure you read through this thread as some of your answers have been posted already. The questions about the board can really only be answered by Duh and i haven't seen him in a bit. Come back DUH!!!
