Can we the person who gave us 0052v (sorry, forget the name) please provide any updated info on the throttling issue?

    Thanks in advance.

Testing at Asus is in progress and JJ just sent me an update. He has not been able to confirm any throttling issues so I provided him with some more information.

I had a look through this thread and I hear users talk about the i7-980X throttling on this board but I don't see any screen shots to confirm this. If you have this problem can you post some screen shots that clearly show this issue. Asus wants to fix this issue and it would help them if they could see some evidence of it. Maybe their engineers aren't as capable as the XS guys at overclocking things to the moon.

For a screen shot why not include two instances of CPU-Z. One with the CPU tab selected and one with the Mainboard tab opened up so it is very clear what CPU and bios version you are using when testing.

Also include i7 Turbo. It only shows 4 of the 6 cores at the moment but that usually gives you an idea if there is a problem. You can also include RealTemp GT since that correctly supports these Gulftown CPUs and the reported multiplier will confirm if there is some turbo throttling going on.

The more testing and the more data the better. I just went through the last 5 pages of this thread and I couldn't find anything that I could send to Asus. I'm willing to help and Asus is listening so post some data to make this problem 100% obvious.

I've got several screens of i7 920 and 980x where you see the drop.
    Here's a couple

You are using an early ES processor and both of your screen shots are at idle. I need to see an i7-980X running at full load so I can check for turbo throttling.

Here are the specs for a retail Core i7-980X.

    http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SLBUZ

It shows it has a default multiplier of 25 and can use either 1 or 2 bins of turbo boost depending on load. If one of these CPUs doesn't use any turbo boost at full load and reaches a maximum multiplier of only 25 or less then that is turbo throttling.

Edit: I have received screen shots with bios 0804. Here's an example of a late Core i7-980X (ES), same CPUID as retail, that is maintaining full turbo boost at 4160 MHz even when all 6 cores are thermal throttling.

On this CPU, it might be right on the edge of turbo throttling but more testing is needed.

JJ at Asus is getting some excellent results with no signs of turbo throttling while using bios 0804.

Full turbo boost is being maintained even with the CPU being red hot at a very nice 4.29 GHz.

The one I've got works great with the two 5870's in quadfire on th P6T7

    @unclewebb
At the moment I'm not running anything on my P6T7 because it will not hold the multiplier, I've got a 980x retail now but if I set the multi to anything above 25 it will drop under load. On my R2E I can run 30x133 on stock vcore and I have no multi drop under load but on the P6T7 the multi drops to 25.

With 980s multipliers higher than 25 are also useless!
We are not seeing this with our retail 980X processors, however, tesing continues on. It takes a little while to find the needle in the haystack but eventually we will.

    Cool.
Can you ask JJ at Asus how he does that? Are there any settings in the bios that should be disabled prior to disable the throttling? I need my 200mhz back

So you think 2X5970's in QF would work fine on this board (P6t7)?
I see you mentioned the 5870's, and not the 5970.

2x5970's will work fine on the board, I've been running one 5970 with 2x5870 on the board in quadfire with a 980x.

    Hello All,

I will go ahead and create an OC Profile and see if it can be hosted online. For your reference in regards to settings there were specific settings that were out of the ordinary.

In regards to some quick settings for reference they are noted below.

    1. Is the Multiplier must be set to AUTO

    2. Speedstep ENABLED
    TurboTech mode ENABLED

3.CPU Turbo Power Limit must be set to DISABLED

Additionally depending on your overclock i would advise you disable C1E and CSTATES and all virtualization options.

From there the rest of the settings were specific to my overclocks (voltages bclk etc).

Should you have any additional questions, concerns or inquiries please let me know. Please enjoy the rest of your day.

Yep, I confirm - when the speedstep is enabled and cpu turbo power limit is disabled - THERE IS NO THROTTLING finally! I tried Prime blend/small tests and Lynx - no throttling. The bios version is 0804.

    Thanks, ASUS, this board Rocks!

    Hello All

I am following up on item brought up in this thread as well in regards to high multi.

    Mydog -

At the moment I'm not running anything on my P6T7 because it will not hold the multiplier, I've got a 980x retail now but if I set the multi to anything above 25 it will drop under load. On my R2E I can run 30x133 on stock vcore and I have no multi drop under load but on the P6T7 the multi drops to 25.

I have been working with a number of overclockers on this board and had no reports of issues with Gulftown Support or running high multi. I did a quick set up and verification and have attached a screen for your reference.

Any chance you could implement the same fixes for Gulftown for the venerable P6T Deluxe? Some of us (maybe just me?) still enjoy using that now ancient relic of a board...

    Hello Gautam
    Captain Jinx

Check your PM. I believe in the past i had already worked with Unclewebb on this board. I have been trying to get the feature rolled in from a special non MP bios to a full MP bios with this feature.

PLease enjoy the rest of your day.

As a side note to all. All current WS boards have this feature present in the bios

    P6T WS : 0901
    P6T6 WS : 0602
    P6T7 WS : 0504

Would you mind sending me a PM with the info for P6T Deluxe as well? I understand there is a 0006 bios, but unfortunately that bios doesn't work with the 980x. Thanks in advance!

Currently the only bios out for the Thermal Throttle when using Turbo for this board is the beta Non MP bios already provided to Unclewebb. I am currently working with HQ on taking the current public MP bios which support Gulftown and other bios updates and including the Thermal Throttle option. This is currently under consideration. Should a bios become availible i will inform Unclewebb of the update.

As always should you have any additional questions, concerns or inqueries please let me know. Please enjoy the rest of your day.

Thank you so much for your response and hard work on this issue. It's great that a company as big as Asus will take the time to support a relatively small community in XS.

Turning on speedstep, turning on turbo and turning off turbo power limit, then setting the multiplier manually, seems to have cured my problems. Thanks for the (decidedly non-obvious) hint!

Currently running at 133x30 with headroom to spare. With speedstep off and turbo off, throttling ensued at 133x28 or 135x27 for me.

Now to try tuning my 2000-specced ram to perform at >1866.

Excellent to see such support. Thanks illuminatiASUS, unclewebb!
