You can try backing up the boinc folder from the programdata folder on your computer. Then after reinstalling windows and installing the boinc client, do not attach it to any projects. Just copy the boinc folder you backed up into the programdata again. Let me know if you need clarification.

Maybe I'm not understanding the question, but you can't move one instance of BOINC from one machine to another without drama. In order for the accounting on each work unit to be valid, the unit has to be tied to a single machine. Valid, error whatever it all has to be tied to a single machine. If you try and do anything "funny" the client will likely just wipe all the work and re-download it to keep the accounting in order.

Having said that you can change the name of your system whenever you like. It's just the network name of the computer. Ultimately it's the unique ID that's important.

Also, don't be concerned about having however many clients listed on the page that aren't doing anything. It's just for accounting purposes. Just worry about getting the best out of your hardware.

    @ PULSAR:
What stepping is/was your 980X? Did you read FUGGER's post: Intel X980 OC Report ?
It outlines strengths & weaknesses in the steppings to date. He says that B1s are good, A0s die.
Hope it's just a memory failure, mate.

BTW, just thought I'd give Supercomputer Week a nice little kick to get it under way:

    mmmm

Putting together another quad machine, and upgrading the CPU in the loungeroom to a PHII 965 from an old 9500,

unfortunatly i'm out of win7 licences so the other quad will end up on xp 32bit, but not to worry!

that'll bring me up to 24 cores in total.

Maybe I should set the laptop up too? What have you people done to me

If it's overclocked, it's not stable. Drop it a couple of notches. If it's not overclocked ... well that gets a little more complicated.

Pretty sure it's meant to look more like a flat line at 100%... are you sure you have set it up right?

I change my theme as I please. This current one is based on brass and wood. That image doesn't look like brass, it IS brass. I'm thinking about going for a minimalist smoked glass theme next.

I spend, maybe, 45 seconds to a minute in windows at a time. Tops. I run a customised Linux machine.

Its a B1, I haven't tested another cpu yet. With the chip in nothing is displayed on the diagnostic display. When I remove the chip I atleast get a readout. Hope its not the memory either $450 dom gt.

You've probably hit the limit of your installed memory. Either throttle it back, like you've done, or cut back the amount of memory it's allowed to take in the preferences. Either way, there's no need to put up with a laggy system.
