Yeah you'll lose the 980X support if you flash to the 0006 BIOS which is the only BIOS that has power limit disable function.

After i update too 2101 Bios and with keeping the same OC settings in my bios i get BSOD in Windows 7 and system restarts. I will try 1904 and 1804 versions to see if i will have the same problems. I have to use 1804 and later version though because i have an i7 930 sitting next to me and i want to install it. Now i am using an 920 C0 Revision.

@ jVIDIA use i7 turbo to see if it throttles... and i dont think bios 0006 supports the 930...

I think it suports ..... I'm actually with the 0006 bios @ 21x200bclk with a 930

It's Linx stable with 1,33vCore @ bios.

so use i7 turbo to see if the throttling occurs or not, and then you will now find if it full supports the 930 or not. my 2 cents

I just dropped in a 930 about 3 weeks ago, to replace my old C0 stepped 920, and there were no issues. I'm running BIOS version 2101 which I installed about a month B4 I installed the new 930. I don't know if that's of any help to you? Good Luck.

Hey Quad my man!

This makes me believe the throttling is maybe hardware (mobo) related because I run up to 4.5GHz 24/7 loaded on my P6X58D and it never throttles. If the P6X bios throttles on the P6T series it would suggest it's an actual hardware issue.

What ya reckon?

Also, maybe give P6X58D Bios 0808 a try, it's a fair bit better than 0703 and previous, IMO.

EDIT: But on second thought, if the 0006 bios fixes the throttling it must be software...hmm...

Anyone fancy some Bios modding?

with official bios was getting throttling with W3520 @ 4750mhz, to get past this, bios 0006 (disable power limit) was needed and did a great job holding high mhz with no throttling..

Don't get me wrong... it's a great board -- when it's not throttling. Can't even keep 4.4 stable at a multiplier higher than 25 is lame.

One year on and still throttling. I feel bad for folks who are still seeing the throttling. I think I made the right move by moving away from Asus and buying Evga instead. No throttling there and board clocks like hot knife through butter!

Are there any i7-980X Gulftown owners trying to use this board and still having throttling issues?

I've just added a new feature to a program I've been working on for a while called ThrottleStop. If you run this program and right click on it, there should be a menu option called Turbo Power Limit. If you have an Extreme CPU that supports this feature, you might be able to increase the TDP and TDC limits for your CPU on the fly. With any luck, maybe there will be no more turbo throttling when trying to push an i7-980X hard on this board.

When you first open the Turbo Power Limit window, it should show you the default TDP / TDC values for your CPU. I'm hoping that increasing those values might encourage the CPU to keep delivering full turbo boost rather than throttling.

The Intel publicly available documentation is non-existent and I don't own an i7-980X so it's possible there might be a minor bug or two that needs to be fixed up. Post some screen shots if you have this combo so I can have a look.

Edit: The first test on a Core i7-940XM mobile CPU shows that this new feature increases power consumption and reduces the amount of turbo throttling. Hopefully it does the same on the Core i7-980X.

interesting unclewebb... so it is only possible to solve the tdp/tdc limits on the intel xtreme series? with that in mind, would this be a cpu limitation and not a bios/motherboard one, like it was thought in this thread? thanks for the feedback!

I don't know yet how many CPUs will allow you to adjust the turbo TDP/TDC settings or if the motherboard has to co-operate and unlock this feature. The i7-980X should support this feature but probably not the i7-920. Some of the mobile Core i5 Dual Cores seem to have this capability as well as the K series of desktop CPUs like the 655K and 875K.

If you run ThrottleStop and right click on it, TS will show you the default TDP/TDC turbo limits for your CPU. If the adjusters are unlocked, you will be able to increase your turbo TDP / TDC limits.

The laptop guys on Notebook Review are having a field day with this new feature. It's helped 5150Joker unlock his Alienware M17x and his Vantage CPU Score jumped by over 20% from 16700 to 20500.

I just hope this feature is useful for the i7-980X problems on this board.
