If I wasn't trying to save money for car-related expenses (selling cruncher parts to do it too) I'd be all for this.

2.5 things are holding me back right now
    1) not knowing which processor model it is
1.5) not having a board to be able to make sure procs arn't DOA (I'd rather go with a tyan that I don't have to spend days fudging around with getting it to work)
    2) not knowing how many cores the rendering apps I'd be using on it actually support (revit states it will use up to 4 CPUs...so...is it 4 cores, or 4 physical processors?)

Good question. It should be AT LEAST 4 cores, but beyond that you'd have to contact the producers.

I've tried to contact autodesk...the only way I can actually send them a support email is if I subscribe to them *students don't get jack for direct support contact* and any tech docs I've seen for 2010 (2011 isn't released yet) never really cleared anything up (although...they do report speed increases with mild-moderate overclocks)

This: http://www.augi.com/publications/hotnews.asp?page=1445 doesn't say anything directly but there's a slight inference that some things might be able to use more than 4 cores.

got a response back from autodesk (was able to finally find somewhere to actually get in touch with them for free)

    Thank you for contacting Autodesk.
In the 2010 edition, there was a limitation of four cores. However, in the new 2011 edition, there is not a limitation to the number of cores that Revit can use while rendering.

hmm....pity the board I've been looking at will be ~700 as the older tyan board has been retired

I might be interested, probably beat the crap out of the E6600 I was planning on using for a server XD

Can I get the manufacture and model of the MB so I know what I would be purchasing (didn't see it posted in this thread)?

Would this board be compatible with the Opty 8356 that are $62/each on ebay right now? If so, I'd be interested in one (4x8356 = $248, board = $100?, RAM is $100-$150) as conservatively speaking that'd be 16 cores of power for $~500. I wonder if that'd be beat out my i7-860 nodes for $650? i.e. is this more PPD in WCG than i7-860 @ 4GHz?

not really, I've seen the sheer amount of "fun" that has been needed to get those boards up and running, and it seems newegg canada has gotten some boards again (~300 this time around for them), only major downside is that I would be limited to the quads, the 700 board had support for hexas

I was kidding (that's what the last two characters of that line were for).

I'm not sure this is worth it though, 4 cheap opty's cost about as much as 1 new cpu, any idea as to what kind of performance we can expect out of these? Also can it run with, say, just 2p instead of all 4?

Yeah, but if they were closer to 65$ you're getting awfully close to an i7, no idea how the two will compare though.

115w TDP sounds a bit toasty under full load lol.

btw I'm in the US, west coast.

But really if I don't have to fiddle with the power connectors, if I can just plug them one beside the other it's alright! would a solid 500w be enough?
