2.5 things are holding me back right now
1) not knowing which processor model it is
1.5) not having a board to be able to make sure procs arn't DOA (I'd rather go with a tyan that I don't have to spend days fudging around with getting it to work)
2) not knowing how many cores the rendering apps I'd be using on it actually support (revit states it will use up to 4 CPUs...so...is it 4 cores, or 4 physical processors?)

I've tried to contact autodesk...the only way I can actually send them a support email is if I subscribe to them *students don't get jack for direct support contact* and any tech docs I've seen for 2010 (2011 isn't released yet) never really cleared anything up (although...they do report speed increases with mild-moderate overclocks)

This: http://www.augi.com/publications/hotnews.asp?page=1445 doesn't say anything directly but there's a slight inference that some things might be able to use more than 4 cores.

got a response back from autodesk (was able to finally find somewhere to actually get in touch with them for free)
Thank you for contacting Autodesk.
In the 2010 edition, there was a limitation of four cores. However, in the new 2011 edition, there is not a limitation to the number of cores that Revit can use while rendering.
hmm....pity the board I've been looking at will be ~700 as the older tyan board has been retired

Would this board be compatible with the Opty 8356 that are $62/each on ebay right now? If so, I'd be interested in one (4x8356 = $248, board = $100?, RAM is $100-$150) as conservatively speaking that'd be 16 cores of power for $~500. I wonder if that'd be beat out my i7-860 nodes for $650? i.e. is this more PPD in WCG than i7-860 @ 4GHz?

not really, I've seen the sheer amount of "fun" that has been needed to get those boards up and running, and it seems newegg canada has gotten some boards again (~300 this time around for them), only major downside is that I would be limited to the quads, the 700 board had support for hexas

I might be in if I can also find a cheap PSU with appropriate wattage... 100 shipped to canada, is it too much to ask?
edt : obv I'd have some questions about power connectors layout and else..
Can anybody that has the board chime in?
I'm still probably in for the procs...just..which particular one are they? lol

the 115w TDP is lower than a core i7 920 (130W)

Hey guys, I am still somewhat interested in this, But does anyone have the link for how to set up power to these boards?
thanks,
brandon
Heatware | Ebay:Crazymullen | If you are unsure what Fhqwhgads means You are REQUIRED to go HERE| Powered by Centon Ram
IMHO Waste is a computer going to a landfill having done actual computations less than 90% of it's life. 90% of the computers powered on right now are idle or powered off; what a waste! [/B]
Is it a coincidence that your wifes pc is called Uranus?
we had a whole thread didicated to this a few weeks ago, it was about 9 pages long... ive been searching for it and cant find it at allanyone know where it went????
Its not overkill if it works.
I think it got lost in the server outage...![]()

and that is one of the main reasons why I wanted to go with a new tyan board...no muss, no fuss in setup

But really if I don't have to fiddle with the power connectors, if I can just plug them one beside the other it's alright! would a solid 500w be enough?
