Thanks wutts and Simon. I’ve been meaning to run that test for quite a while and frankly I was a little surprised by the results.

I’ve been testing Vantage the past few days trying to get the GFX scores up but I haven’t gained on it much. What I have noticed testing both 06 and Vantage is that this 890GX/850 chipset MB will complete both tests at a higher CPU clock than my 790FX MB’s. The CPU score is better in both tests but the memory doesn’t clock up as well as I’d like. Maybe chew has some insight as he’s tested this chipset?

Anyway below is today’s Vantage test results. This is the best CPU score I have had using this CPU.

Raising the bar to 4.6GHz for 3D huh? I wouldn't worry too much on that memclock, 830 6-6-6 should be good enough for 3 marks, unless you're able to raise CPU-NB over 3.2GHz. Otherwise i would leave the mem like it is.

Congrats on the results Oldtimer you really pushing it.........the highest 3d Ive gotten was 4.5ghz in 06 and 4.4 in vantage. Is this one of the newer cpus?

One thing Im very impressed about is the power of the 5series cards your 2x4870x2 still slower in GPU result in vantage against my 5970. ATI did a great job with these cards.

    Heres my vantage result http://service.futuremark.com/result...eResultType=19.

This particular result was done at 4.2ghz.

Thanks Zeus, the memory will just have to be what it is for now. No this chip doesn’t like NB much over 3GHz at least using my cooling.

Thanks Titan7171, this is the same and only 965-C3 I own or have tested, Old 666. I’d like to have some 5870’s or a couple of 5970’s but that isn’t going to happen for a while.

I didn’t want to double post but this is the last in this set so I figured I’d go ahead because I’m going to flash the 1.2 bios then install the 555 and see if it unlocks on this MSI as it’s a proven unlocker on other MB’s I’ve tested.

The CPU score was higher when I tested @4.58GHz but the overall score was lower. The SPi-1M and sPrime-32 scores remained about the same from 4.55 up to 4.62GHz so the higher speed didn’t help in those tests.

    That's what i'm looking for myself, 27K.

I really envy your CPU power, 4625MHz is far beyond my reach.

Looks like this board is a tad slower than your 790FX board, you did 27K with 100MHz less CPU power on that one.

Btw, the cpu score does zero for the total score, i wouldn't worry too much about that.

Thanks guys, I"m starting to learn just a little bit of what this MB likes but I doubt I'm smart enough to understand what it needs.

you dont use that cpu for regular computing/ every day use? you just leave it at stock when you not testing?

    Well Folks....

Looks like I've joined the dead GBT 890GX club...

What really sux is I had just found a 24/7 stable clock I was happy with.
    245 x 17 x 11 x 11 @ 1.52 Vcore and 1.325 NBcore (4.165/2695), decent Memory timings and Prime Blend stable for over an hour.

I woke up this morning, went to check my E-Mail and the machine Posted fine, but when it got to the Windows splash screen I had nothing but a moveable pointer.
I rebooted and it all went downhill from there "Nothing", fans spin, pump works, but not even a post screen....

I tried everything, reset CMOS, pulled Battery, unplugged while doing all the other things, pulled VC, pulled 1 stick of RAM and all non OS drives, and... Nothing!
    Pretty sure it's dead!

I swapped my 790XT-UD4P back in tonight when I got home from work and everything is working fine.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted...

I can't say for sure guys...

But ever since my 1st Phenom board (MSI K9A2), I've been a little leary of boards with a 4+1 power section. This 890GX fits that mold...

I understand that quality components can make a difference and I had really hoped this board would prove that point.

I examined the board pretty closely after I pulled it and couldn't see anything burnt, but it does kind of reinforce my original observations.

Wrong or not, I personally won't ever buy a board with less than an 8+2 power section.....

The GBT 890GX actually seemed to OC better than this 790XT-UD4P, but this 790 has been a frikken tank!

Bring on the 890FX Premium boards! I'll buy one...

Sorry to hear that it broke Dave. I agree with the 890 MB’s OC’ing at least this one OC’s better than the 790FX’s I own. I hope you get a replacement that’s more durable.

@Titan7171, yeah I’m testing using chilled water. As to the 24/7 OC’ing deal, well this is the way I test. If the switch is on you can figure the system is running as fast as I can get it to run at that time. To test 24/7 stability I would have to slow it down and that just runs against my nature.

Dave, sorry to here. I have been trying my hardest to get the GB 890 board working again. I actually had to put in a PCI video card to get a display. I have to pull off some vodoo to get it to post and then sometimes it will boot. If I try to save any bios settings it requires the clr CMOS with no power cord. I can flash the bios from a USB stick odly enough, but all bios version are doing the same thing. The MSI will be here tomorrow and I will try to recover the bios. My only problem is, I don't have the original 1.0b bios that was on the board. It looks like oldtimer has 1.0, not sure why mine was diff.

OK Im still a bit confusedsorry really...........can you run chilled water all day long as long as you have the system running? Is there a oc setting that you run thats less than the highest runs you do? Do you only test on that system or do you use it for playing games or surfing the net when you not running benches? This is what I mean by 24/7.

The reason I ask is because if you running 3d at 4.6ghz.......you can prolly run 4.4-4.5ghz for gaming and surfing

I dont leave my system running 24/7 but as long as Im up the system is on and running at 4.1ghz (now that Im on 64bit windows) I would love to heve a cpu running at 4.4ghz for daily use.

Ok, I don’t mean to confuse. I only bench test this system and when the testing is over I turn it off. My chiller isn’t the best one going so the longer the computer runs the warmer the cooling fluid gets. In other words the freezer can’t keep up. When I start bench testing usually sometime in the morning the fluid temp is -15C +/-. When the fluid temp gets up to -5C I usually stop benching because of instability.

I haven’t taken the time to play a game in months; it appears the benching has become the game.

ahh ok thats what I wanted to understand its only a test rig, -5c is pretty cold still......I wish I could try something like that myself....the coolest I can get my system is 10-12c idle and I got those 3d runs at 4.5ghz.......That -17c lower you get makes a big difference
