Basically, the price increase is being used as a way for retailers to control their inventories and is not being done on the behest of ATI...as far as I know.
If they actually increased 5870 prices, the Eyefinity6 would end up at GTX480 levels. I don't see much sense in doing so unless Fermi availability really is as inconsistent as initially rumored.
