I have killed my 920 (got it when i7 first came out) and Striker II Extreme so it is time for an upgrade. I can get two of these and this MB for a doable price. Already have 2 HX1000's and 2 4870X2's on a great watercooling setup.
Just a suggestion but try to spend the extra $200 for a pair of 5520's..you'll be happy you did.

good to know, will the 5506's work though? I will probably go with the 5520's though. How does a 5520 compare to a 920?

    yea, they should work.
A E5520 is a 2260mhz 45nm quad with 17 multi and 18 on turbo so with a 200BCLK you should be able to hit 3600 with decent chips..
$384.00 each at Newegg but I bet you can beat that price by shopping around.

The 5506's don't have Hyperthreading , that's why we recommend the E5520 which is the cheapest Xeon with HT.

Oh this is such a loaded question. My gut feeling is if I can get the speed I expect on air then a magny-cours at maybe 3400-3600mhz would be damned close. Now thats 24 cores vs 12 but still a dualie so it's fair in my book..

Yes, bought it before the Z7S-WS mess or it wouldn't be here but it is excellent.

So what you're saying is that the 4P Magny-Cours (48 cores) would slaughter your rig... That'd actually be pretty cool. Having AMD need thrice+ as many cores to /match/ your rig, much less beat it.

Bob...that would be in a different league. Like GP2 car vs F1.
edit: No, more like http://www.deere.com/servlet/ProdCatProduct?tM=FR&pNbr=8225RRW vs http://www.deere.com/servlet/ProdCat...R&pNbr=9630TRW
Both great pieces of machienery, but for different jobs

And IIRC s7eph3n had his MC at 3Ghz And that was early silicon, so if someone (hint-hint) would make a MC board thats enthusiast oriented.... well. MM would have a fight hed like

Ok Ok but what about a case for this monster and not some giant cube either. I have been looking for a case to fit this it is hard as hell to find anything that would house this card with current specs
"Motherboard is 381mm width by 345mm length"
    can anyone help with this?

so XEON's go OCing at last..?
isn't that what everybody were looking for.. ?

    though..
is this a wise decision by intel to approve..?..

500$ MB & 2x5520 gives you easily a dual E5540,X5550 or X5570, maybe just with a lesser QPI...
    or..
    500+770 = ~300+~2900(X5570)...
    3200 -> 1270... lol

If the two QPI units perform like the single QPI ones I have seen overclocked, I think that there is a good chance you will be able to get it stable. Though I would like to see you put it under water, and how well these chips take high voltage.

Well... 4400+ probably not on air. My X5660's are very similar, and I have as of yet been unable to stabilize them at 4,4Ghz. 4,3 is fine at ~1,36V Vcore, anything higher requires a huge voltage boost that I am not willing to give. Might be the uncore running too high, but still - B step Westmere-EPs won't easily hit 4,5+ for truly stable 24/7 operation. At least when using "safe" voltages.

I know that it is near the limit for air cooled, but depending on his luck with the chips...
