@namco- ati already released a fermi killer at this point. havnt you been reading???? lol
Nvidia have had to cut the clocks of fermi based gpu's because of the heat problems,
and they cant let the cores underclock in idle as much as they would like due to the gpu malfunctioning...
although i'm sure we'll all have a better idea of the reality of the situation after nvidia's announcment later on today.

i'm hoping fermi is better than the leaks would suggest, as is every intelligent member here. We all want a price war...

More details on NVIDIA Fermi - price, PSU requirements and more
TweakTown's own video card guru, Shane Baxtor has acquired some more specific details about NVIDIA's upcoming Fermi powered GTX 470, one of their first two DX11-ready cards to hit the market in answer to AMD's top-end HD 5800/5900 series.

With the very active rumour mill giving a hint that NVIDIA plan to make a big announcement regarding Fermi within the next 12 hrs, Shane gets an early scoop on the pricing and PSU requirements for the GTX 470. He learns that the official launch price looks to be $299 USD which sits in line with AMD's HD 5850, though performance is expected to be more around HD 5870 levels

Power wise, NVIDIA is apparently slapping on a minimum requirement of 550 Watt, up slightly from AMD's min requirement on the HD 5850 at 500 Watt. In any case, it shouldn't matter to most people wanting a card like this, knowing full well that a quality PSU with plenty of headroom makes for a much more stable gaming rig....

He learns that the official launch price looks to be $299 USD which sits in line with AMD's HD 5850, though performance is expected to be more around HD 5870 levels.

In a separate posting, Shane is confident NVIDIA will announce their launch date for the Fermi cards within the next 12 or so hours which the rumour mill is indicating will be mid to late March. He also feels there may be an availability issue on the horizon with these cards due to the 1 year warranty that NVIDIA gives to its AIBs as opposed to a lot of the AMD cards on the market with 2 year warranties
I suppose it's safe to assume that Fermi is coming. Why is the warranty getting shorter, though?
$299 GTX470 with the performance of 5870 would be an absolutely killer card. I have a feeling that GTX480 may be priced decently as well!

It is going to be priced decently. Why? Because Nvidia is not looking to make any profit from this line of GeForces any more. They have postponed money making plans to several months later. So they are looking to sell these cards initially at a great loss, but will produce only a few thousand so their loss will be minimal. At the moment they can price it anything they want. They are going to be killer cards that you can't buy.

Later when yields are up and maybe design issues have been overcome, they will be able to mass produce the cards at this given price. And effectively they will be the company who were offering good cards at good prices since the end of March. It was just your problem you couldn't find any of them in stores in March!
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

But this price-scenario means that ATi has a refresh (or new GPU) ready to fight the Fermi at launch time.

This is a great news, it means we are back to the price-war, and the area of $499 for the top dog.

299$? Hard to believe , but i guess we will see. Right now the only way i can see that happening, the performance is just not there. Nvidia is good at making money, if this was indeed a superior product , it should cost more.

Yes indeed, $299 for GTX 470 means either ATI has a excising or a refresh/new GPU to compete with Fermi.
If GTX 470 matches/beats 5850 then we should expect e refresh from ATi too, is my assessment of this price-

NVIDIA and it's troubled GeForce 400 series
Today I wanted to write a little 'opinionated' editorial. Typically we do not address rumors and gossip. But an accumulation of things that have been going on over at camp NVIDIA and the Internet leading us to believe things are not as they should be. The rumors are creating a rather negative stigma for NVIDIA.

Last week most of NVIDIA's partner got sampled with the first GeForce 400 series graphics cards, and of course somebody somewhere leaked information towards a person which We'll just call 'Mr C', this friendly little fellah has an unnatural and seriously unhealthy attitude towards NVIDIA, I'm seriously afraid he's gonna stroke out some day. Take a chill pill man, it's just hardware.

With his most recent plot and post however a lot of chatter started on the web with ATI fans attacked NVIDIA fans, the guy is really good stirring up things, yet his claims are often well .. very semi-accurate for sure. What I wanted to do is talk you through what has been happening at NVIDIA (from what we know), where we are and what's going to happen.......

This seems like a way to make AMD lose potentially tens of millions if not hundreds of millions of dollars.

If they make enough hoopla about this and the pricing, AMD going to have to reduce the price of their card from 399 down to 299 or less. And their 5850 down atleast 100 dollars. This is of course assuming the gtx 470 performs like the 5870 or better.

X million in sales * pricedrop = tens of millions to hundreds of millions in lost revenue. AMD won't lose money off each card because they are cheap to make. However, I can see the graphic division as a whole not being profitable again.

That alot of damage from a few thousand cards. In the long run this could hurt NV. Its almost a kamikaze move because I don't know how they could sell a 5xx mm2 card so cheap, even in the future.

the only thing ATi may have as to counter the GTX 480 threat would be a 5950 "2*1440" as for the GTX 470 it may need a 5850 @ 1ghz or a bump of the ram or both.

Exciting exciting maybe Nvidia will be able to lower 5970's price also and we dont need to wait for Gemini !!!

But the fact remains that most likely the 5970 will be top dog till Gemini comes.

Actually it is about time. ATi has been milking the marked for too long, because nVidia just jumped over those cards that should be competing with 5x-series.

Obviously NVIDIA relies on the effect Fermi will leave in HPC/GPGPU. If they fail to sell Tesla-cards based on Fermi in volume, then they might get in trouble because they sell GeForce-Fermi too cheap.

GTX 470 for 299 is a good deal even if it doesn't beat HD 5870.

That SabrePC-site sure seems a bit odd to me. Has anyone ever had any dealings with them before? I reviewed their privacy, security, shipping etc. from their Site Map and my paranoid mode switched on. It even seems like the site was put up like yesterday. What is this Genoedge Corporation which the SSL-certificate belongs to? Their website didn't explain much.

And no, I wasn't about to make any preorders, just being curious

The best deal for us (the frequent consumers of GPU), would be:

    GTX 470 for $299 which matches/beats 5850
    GTX 480 for $399 which matches/beats 5870
    Dual GF100 for $499 which matches/beats 5970

But we all know that a superior Fermi (without a real competitor) won't come cheap (just as the ATi 5x-series didn't come cheap either).
These prices won't happen unless ATi has new/refresh GPU to compete with Fermi at launch. That's when it gets really interesting for nerds, because good and cheap GPUs would flying around everywhere.
