Asus is really bringing in the Cypress goodies as in addition to the Radeon HD 5870 TOP and Radeon HD 5850 DirectCU (seen yesterday), it has also developed a Matrix series Radeon HD 5870 model. Bearing the ROG (Republic of Gamers) banner, the upcoming Radeon features 1600 Stream Processors, a 256-bit memory interface, a GPU clock of 900 MHz (850 MHz stock), 2GB of GDDR5 memory @ 4900 MHz (4800 MHz), DirectX 11 and CrossFireX support, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, plus two 8-pin PCIe power connectors (as opposed to the dual 6-pin plugs on reference models).

The Matrix HD 5870 also comes with v-check points, a button that returns the card to 'safe' frequencies in case your overclocking goes wrong, a custom, dual-slot cooler with a (likely) PWM fan, and a nice, large backplate.

its not so much that it can help with current games, but that when new games come out, they can develop them knowing that 2GB cards exist and can use it. i for one will not be buying a new card unless it has 2GB, because i keep mine for about 2-3 years, and 1GB will not last until 2012

About time if not a bit too late!
I suppose this card will attempt to compete with MSI Lightning (which has 1GB, though) at overclocking.
    My bet is on MSI!

Wow, looks very nice. Can't imagine the price being very competitive though. I think it'll sit bang in between the 5870 and the 5970. Lol. Hope Its priced well though. Wonder what the Asus Ares will be like if this looks this stunning?

mhhh the voltage points suck... the walls of those via holes break really easily and then you cant meassure anymore :/

i like the idea of finally seeing 2gb ati cards, but i dont like the feeling of this card probably charging a big tax for being special...
just a normal ref card with 2gb would be nice...
still, props to asus for offering people a really full blown 5870... tbh i was surprised how many people spent that much money on a 1gb card in 2009...

The msi may be the better OC'er but the asus will own 1600p

    At last!

    A 2gb 5870!

Now why was this not done 6 months ago?

With the shortage of GPUs's they could have spent the time bringing this out sooner.... probably too close to Fermi now to be seriously considered by me.

You might be surprised. Throw some texture packs at some games and you'll use up the available memory on a 1GB card. I know that I won't be upgrading to any card without 2GB of ram.
