I know I'm a bit late to this thread, but i can give the Noctua U12P a thumbs up.

It's pretty amazing IMO, have mine setup with 2 X NF-P12's set to 900rpm (ultra low noise). Keeps my 965 C3 at 49-50c @ 4GHz/1.45v/2600MHz NB. Use Arctic MX-3 BTW

Drops to mid 40's if i set the fans to 1300rpm, great cooler! Imagine it would have no problem keeping a Thuban cool, especially with better fans than i have

Frostytech is total crap. They DONT TEST WITH REAL CPUS!!!!! They use a stupid heat plate and put whatever TDP load the chips are speced for on it. The results are not going to be anywhere close to a test in an open bench or even in a case. Frostytech's stuff is just plain conjecture with their numbers. Compare the numbers they get to a test setup where things are super controlled like Xbit labs does, and there are quite a bit of difference in the results. Some of frostytech's "best" coolers tend to place completely different when real world testing is done. In conclusion, FROSTYTECH NUMBERS ARE PURE AND UTTER CRAP!!!!

    1.6v is a lot..
but, do you have other links with more adequade testing in a AMD's plataform?
I'm interested in a new cooler too and I was going with this fenrir, the price is nice, more tests would help alot

You cant lap an HDT cooler...

Unless you just polish it with like 2000 grit you arent getting anywhere...just doing the above.

    ^^^ That's nasty!
And yeah, you can't lap HDT...
Talking about the 2000 grit thing, unless you're willing to go through around a hundred of sheets your lapping will not be really noticeable!

there is more pictures out there if you google...

also i dont know how you direct heatpipe guys apply thermal paste but i always had great results with putting a line of paste on the ihs, about 2/3 of the way across the processor, right in the middle & going opposite direction of the heatpipes (if heatpipes run from front of case to back across processor, put a line of TIM in middle of cpu going from top of case to bottom, about 2/3rds the lenght of ihs)

I was also debating lapping my CCF myself but for the most part it's flat and lapping would be pointless.

Then again the base is made horribly and the edges of the aluminum part scratched my CPU IHS. Then the scratches eventually appeared on the copper heatpipes....maybe I oughta get rid of those...

i personally think unless the cooler is obviously not flat, lapping the cpu ihs would yield much better results

Nah, you can take a fair bit of material off with 2000grit, it's fairly coarse as polishing and flatting abrasives go, it's just that everyones got used to doing it in ten minutes with some 600 grit and leaving it at that, I mean, that one above must have had about a mm of material took away, that's not lapping, that's grinding!

For what it's worth I have an S1283 and used it on my X4 955BE until I moved it to water. It worked but it was defiantly not up to the task of any serious overclocking. Even at stock volts/speeds it was pushing towards 50c (where the stock cooler was pushing towards 60c, I believe I have a hot chip).

So an X6 may just overwhelm it.

i disagree w/ you there, as ive pushed 1.5v+ w/ my s1283 (and ultra kaze fan) on 9850be, 940be, 955be, & 965c3 and it held all of them around 50c

very nice concept flank3r! might want to consider the rads blowing out/away rather than into/under the tech bench. will make for better ambient thermals.
