The one demo'ed at CES had one x6 and one x8 connector, so it probably breaks the 225w barrier. Will it get close to 300W is anyone's guess, but you shouldn't dismiss what ThermalTake and CoolerMaster stated just like that.

Makes you think no? AMD did all their demos at Computex on Juniper/Broadway

+ 75W coming from the PCIe slot like the HD5970, it's 300W, like the 5970 with 2 gpu...

Maybe less power requirements in real life and final release , hope so. Maybe it's a FUD from both case manufacturers to increase the sales potential of their new cases ''designed for Fermi'', they are @ CES to push their products isn't it?

But anyway as for HD5970, Watercooling is a great thing for overclocking potential and quiet operation mode. 200W, 300W who cares if watercooled. The power supply maybe But they are talking about broken cards returned to nVidia after validation testing for case cooling design....

What does it mean probably: that the testing hardware delivered for case engineering was not the mature version, and probably not the final one. Check the HD5970 story, it was a nightmare before 9.12 driver and today some people still have hardware issues.... not only driver issues... Hope that the delay with Fermi is a good new, and that we can hope to receive mature and stable hardware with rc and not beta or alpha drivers and bios...

We have some demo hardware available months before official release in my company, and for example with servers, the internal design is not the final one, the case is clearly over weighted because it's custom made, the fans are running @100% speed because Bios is not final release and we want to make sure not burning some components, etc... we have some Nehalem EX based servers, looks horrible but it's engineering process, and certainly not the final version. That's why there are NDA's.... Otherwise you'll get a lot of FUDing on the market with non definitive specs, and issues that will not happen with the release candidates and the production model. We need demo hardware for some customers and some projects, but we would never sell these boxes because sometimes the specs are not final one.

But I think that the good information to keep in mind for people waiting for Fermi, is that they'll need a good power supply, and a good cooling architecture within their case. Who cares to buy only released PSU models referenced on the nVidia or ATI website? If you need a 1000W PSU, you need a 1000W PSU, not this particular one, ok there are some exceptions but... Who has a SLI and use the recommended case on the nVidia's website... probably not every nVidia user. I don't know if my TJ07 is ''certified'' by nVidia but I don't care. I think that there is behind that ''Fermi certified stuff'' some commercial agreements between case manufacturers and nVidia, because today's IT industry need business partnerships and alliances. That's the way big it companies stay alive. Mergers, takeovers, ...

Badly here when giving such information, TT and CM may put some fears, uncertainties ans doubts in our minds.

They're on the same node, if 5970 uses 300W and Fermi will at least compete with 5970, it can't be less than say 225W... Unless Nvidia designed an unbelievably power efficient GPU which I doubt
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

    Calm down, and don't flame.

It would be sad IF ATI were releasing the 5970 after Nvidia's Fermi, which... is not the case. That's what I wanted to point out.
And no, a single Gpu Fermi card won't be faster than the 5970.
So yes, Nvidia is playing catch up. And their cards won't be here until 2 months (at least).

Yeah, it's pretty obvious that lots of full tower cases with correct ventilation are ready for SLI/Tri-SLI Fermi certification, although they may don't get it due to the manufacturers not feeling like paying the extra bill.

ThermalTake and CoolerMaster statement: Fermi is hot, hot, hot! ThermalTake will sell a specific case, Fermi-certified... because for SLI it seems you need an additional cooling module.... CoolerMaster also build a Fermi-certified case, under NDA for the moment. But... very very hot... and 300W for ... a single GPU ... how will they do for the dual GPU? Anyway hope this is interesting for you .

FERMI + WATERCOOLING FTW GUYS ! A new heat , power and overclocking challenge is coming soooon
    Very interesting read.

What was most interesting was this:
Il se susurre d’ailleurs que la plus puissante des Fermi égalerait une Radeon HD 5870 mais pas la 5970. Pour aller au-delà de la 5870, il faudrait augmenter les fréquences et… dépasser alors la limite des 300 watts
Basicly he's secretly implying that the top Fermi part will be roughly equivalent to a hd5870 and not a 5970. To surpass the hd5870 Fermi would have to break the 300W limit.

So to recap: Fermi is ½ year late, about equal to a 5870, consumes as much as a 5970 and it's much more expensive to produce. Nvidia is about to enter a world of pain I'm afraid....

Well... it's only a speculative thought. nVidia = no official statement about final specs, from their side we have only such a commitment for availability, and some tiny clues, just enough to allow users to their fantasies, just enough to maintain a pseudo suspense and keep the attention of potential targeted customers... It looks like Stev Job's strategy. Nothing filters before official launch (theoritically) and apple fanboys are speculating, sometimes with very good ideas...

    But nVidia is not Apple.

I never said Nvidia was not playing catch up. Who was ahead of who wasn't anywhere in my post. You're trying to create an argument where there is none for the sole purpose of flaming this thread.

All I said was that I would be sorely dissapointed if Fermi beat the HD5970. Me personally. That's it. If you want to imagine some non-existent anti-ATI undertone despite my owning multiple ATI cards and there being no such tone, have at it. But you can debate that with yourself.

    End of discussion.

You would be disappointed if Fermi beat the 5970? But the 5970 is already here. Which means that you will be disappointed is Fermi is an awesome card. Which means that you wouldn't like Fermi to be a fast card. Which doesn't make sense unless you're an ATI fanboy, and you're being blamed otherwise.

    I don't get it.

Whatever makes you think that nvidia would be happy to sell their cards for anything less than $500/600/700?

If Fermi performs as expected (faster than 5870, slower than 5970) its reasonable price would be in the $500's. Lower than $500 and higher than $600 wouldn't make sense.

I would be disappointed because it would allow NV to price gouge even more, and ATI wouldn't be able to offer anything to beat or match it. When two manufacturers offer a product with similar performance levels you get better competition in terms of pricing. Some people think ATI would drop prices, but if you wind up having to buy two of them (and nearly equaling or exceeding the cost of the single faster card) a lot of people don't find it worth the investment. Plus then you're at the mercy of drivers when it comes to scaling.

If one blows the other out of the water, they can charge whatever they want. Remember the $800 8800 Ultras?

Never said it was likely to happen, just that if it did, it would be disappointing. Everyone is so anxious to throw more gas on the fanboy flamewars after the mods spent so much time extinguishing them. And I'm not even a dedicated fan of either company

I'm just anxious to see hard data on Fermi and some side by side benchmarks with ATI's offerings. Enough of this PR wharrgarbl.

prices are much higher than they should be. video cards have been going up about 10% since summer 09. if things were normal, a 5870 should be under 300$ by now. if fermi comes out for 400$ then we may see a solid 30% price drop by ati, or if fermi comes out for 500$, ati might just drop prices to force nvidia to do the same.

If the top Fermi card comes out with 400$ price tag then hell will freeze over.

GeForce 380 has huge power consumption, but performance is only few percent under HD 5970 and far away from HD 5870 perf. Trust me, will see next week on many servers, when NDA for info lifts!

The numbers NV distributed so far are really "best case scenarios."
