Corsair H50 watercooling a quick look

My wife actually got me this for Xmas......

Now I know most of you are saying what the heck is chew* doing with something like that.

To be truthfull My True 120 is getting on my nerves and I wanted something quieter with roughly the same performance.

Lets take a look at what you get.

Here's what it's replacing, excuse the dust.

Pulled my fan and am going to try out the fan supplied in a pull fashion so I can use a dust filter over radiators intake.

Far from my neatest job but makes the job alot easier with heatsinks that require a mount plate behind mobo. I have been hacking up the motherboard trays since socket 462 for easy installations

    Installation was really simple.

One more shot before we close it all back up. It feels alot less cluttered now.

A quick run through prime 95 tells us that temps are within reason and I haven't lost anything clock wise. However I have lost the annoying sound of my air cooler

My only complaint is the back plate sort of hits solder joint's of the PWM on the back of this board but causes no ill effects.

I wonder how long it will take for that RAD to fill up and get clogged with dust :P Looks like your case could use a good once over with a dust rag and to clean them fans and blades. Probably drop your case ambients a few C to.

Hope you also got a vacuum cleaner or some kind of duster thing for Xmas.
    Nice small review, though!

    Nice Chew

You gonna slap another fan on the back for a P/P comparison
later and reply back for results?

Those seem to be great for the price.

Even better considering Best Buy has them for $59.99 this week and they now fit 775,1156,1366,am2 and am3 at no additional cost.

Might grab myself a good old yate loon and just a dust filter, trying to eliminate needing to pull my heatsink to clean it and noise.

I'm rather lazy and my everyday rig just has to work.

Chew*, I am in the same boat you are. I have really been thinking about this cooler. That is a nice vid Q6600 you have there. Mine is a 1.275, and it takes 1.495 to run 8*450 24/7. How do you think this cooler would handle this kind of voltage? I see it looks you are running about 1.17 and hitting 60C. Have you played with it much, and how does it scale with voltage increases.

I have not seen any reviews that list it on a Q6600. Thanks for posting.

tbh this is a very very hot leaky chip If i push / pulled with it I think it could tame my chip at 3600 no issues. I just find no need to run at that speed anymore for web browsing

I should mention I just used the thermalgoo that came stock on the H50, I'm sure if I opted for a diff paste I would probably see better temps but once again I'm lazy and don't feel like reapplying paste every so often and this will stay mounted till my maximus-->rampage formula kicks the bucket.

Here you go, hope this answers your question. This is no longer my benching ram in this rig so I didn't push to 3.6 as it gets flaky after 1066.

Keep in mind I'm in a less than optimal pull config.

Quite sure with slightly better fan / fans in a push or push pull config and with a normal application of thermal paste temps can likely be improved.

Going back to its daily speed of 3 gig undervolted now

Thanks for the for checking. It looks like in a P/P setup, I would run 1 or 2 C warmer. I could drop to 3.4ghz @ 1.42 and do really well then. Thanks again.

i wonder whats limiting that thing... whats the water to air delta?
i think that whimpy rad is whats holding the thing back... i mean its surface area is the same as the TRUE, if not actually less...
the block and pump are probably good enough for quite some extra watts...
do you have a tripple rad at hand? wonder how good it would do with that

Whats limiting it is my less than optimal setup and hot intake air through rad from my case.

Just my preference the way I set it up but its realworld.

None the less I am losing nothing clock wise.

I'm with chew on this one guys. For $80 USD (or less in some places), the H50 pretty handily competes with the best air solutions.

I have 2 of these Corsair H50 coolers running in my son's rigs. I just installed them last month. One is on a Q9770 @4Ghz, the other is on a Q6850 @3.8Ghz...and both are unbelievably quite rigs.

I have both set up to exhaust air through the rad (contrary to the instructions that recommend air flow in through the rad). I run a basic setup with 1 x 120 in the lower front cooling the HD cage, and the Corsair quiet 120 exhausting through the rear mounted rad. Both cases have 2 HDs, 1 OC GTX280, single DVD-RW, 4 sticks of ram, EVGA mobo, and Corsair 750w PSU. Basic rigs to be sure.

The H50 is not an OC champion, but gone are the Noctua NH-U12P coolers (which were quiet to begin with), as is another case fan I could eliminate in each rig. Also gone is a serious amount of bulk hanging on the socket. The end result is a quieter, cleaner case without the loss of any OC on these 24/7 rigs. With our 3 computers all in the same room, the quietness is refreshing.

chew is right on the button with this. Buh-bye air cooling !

Does anyone know what month Corsair makes new product announcements? I can't wait to see the second revision, and possibly a graphics card cooler like this.

Adding a fan to these for push pull does pretty much nothing to help temperatures. I tested on in multiple configurations and got the best results with the fan pulling outside air through the rad in the design that Corsair suggests. The only real pain is reversing the rest of the case fans if you have other fans. Having it pull through the rear of the case only increased temps by a few C at full load with a QX9650 @ 3.95GHz. Push pull was a complete dway with no gains but no loss in performance.

This has definitely got me thinking. If these offer similar performance to the top air coolers it sounds like a decent plan. Also, I think it's good to mention that you won't have to worry about the heatsink/fan setup clearing ram with this setup. Hmm....

The base is only a few mm thick Base piccie not advised to lap it (I can remeasure it if you wish). I opened my first faulty review sample ( first samples had some issues with protruding screws due to inappropriate countersunk holes ) lost a bit of fluid, also discovered how thin the base was. Flushed it and tried to refill it with a syringe... completely lost it's performance and made a gurgling noise indicating it needed more fluid. Might be interesting to open the unit again to see what effect premixed liquid cooling has on the components.

I liked the kit, was a good replacement for my TRUE, but beating it by 10°C as originally claimed by the marketing guys, sorry not possible (unless they completely messed up case flow in the air setup)

Main thing is hassle free installation and pretty decent performance... handled my I7 up to 4ghz quite well

Chew can you check your pump speeds ? If I hooked up the pump to my Asus board CPU connector, it would run at a few 100 less rpm than when I hooked it up to another fan connector...

    Happy New year all

Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Sure i will check them out now. Preety sure i got everything disabled in HW monitor though.

Looks like 1360rpm at lowest and about 1420rpm highest on cpu header.

Yep them are good values, I've seen some as low as 1200rpm thus limiting performance... fan is around 1600rpm at max speed... some have obtained better performance by rotating the unit 180°C ( so logo upside down ) I couldn't confirm these findings

How noisy is the actual pump? My system is ultra silent but cooling capabilities hardly keep up with i7 920. H50 would be great to combat that, but i'm afraid it'll just be too noisy.

Hmmm maybe it helps remove trapped air. I know the first time I fired mine up it gurgled for a second or 2.

    Pump is inaudible.

Can you do a quick compare between the TRUE Black and the H50 with the same FAN (& same RPM)?

I can tell you your looking at maybe 1C difference.....I just got rid of the darn thing, really don't want to rip it apart all over again. This is my daily beater, when dismantaled I have no PC.

Leeghoof compared it against true 120 in his review he linked take a look
