Thanks ridney. A few considerations(which you've likely already thought of). You've already got wide-medium angle covered with your 17-55, so a 24-105 would overlap a lot of your focal-lengths. With the 70-200..it's still a nice range and you would only have a void from 55-70, which isn't much of an issue..one lens or the other will get you that 15mm by taking a few steps forward or back. Here in Canada, the 70-200 is $1200 CAD, and the 24-105 is $1270CAD..and the 24-105 is also slower than your 17-55. To top off the price issue, the 24-105 takes 77mm filters, vs. the 70-200's 67mm...costing a few bucks more for each filter. I guess the 2 main issues are whether you plan to go FF down the road, and if you really want/need 200mm FL. GL

Edit: I guess the filter size issue isn't an issue, as your 17-55 uses that size and you could share them.

Lestat can you set aperture manually with any of those lenses?

I could really use a ~35mm fast lens with MF & manual aperture for my 500D when recording videos since I can't control the depth of field using the camera settings

you bet. the 50mm will go to F/16 and the 135mm will go to F/22

but M42 lenses have a little push pin on the rear of the lens that must be pressed in in order to allow the iris to open and close when you change the f-stop.
most M42 adapters to not hold that pin in, so you have to make your own way to hold the pin in, i just use superglue, push the pin in, put a little around the pin and hold it until its dry enough to stay, and then let it dry fully before i use it.

there are some lenses with an auto/manual switch and those ones do not require the pin to be pushed in, just flip the switch and you can change f-stop on the fly.

the 135mm lens is like that where as all my other M42 lenses must have the pin held down.

i'll get a picture for you tonight when i get home.
