Actually most of Intels IGPs are developed inhouse. Only some of them are licensed from Imgtec(e.g. GMA500). I'm not sure if Imgtec also sells individual IP(they probably do), but they do sell complete GPU designs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerVR#Series5_.28SGX.29 is their current stuff. XT series also supposedly scales linearly with additional cores(It makes sense since they do tile based rendering). Also the 5 series GPUs are DX 10.1 and Opengl compatible so they wouldn't be different to program for than an ATi or Nvidia card.
Seems we made our greatest error when we named it at the start

lol and I thought I was the only one who remembered that...

It will be interesting to see when you start hearing news about Microsofts plans as when they decide to launch will obviously effect things. I felt that Microsoft largely rushed the 360 out to get a foot hold in the market ( one of which costed them due to craptacular QA ; Red Ring of Fail anyone? )

Let's not compare the iPhone to the PSP, the control a developer has over the PSP compared to the iPhone is incomparable. Apple's API is terrible and locked off to devs.

However, since the 3GS has the SGX series GPU, it can technical do marvels, in theory.

    edit: like so!

They better have some decent levels of Ram and Vram

512mb shared between the gpu and console?

    [avgn]WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?[/avgn]

So erm... the same amount as the Xbox 360 then?

The only difference is that the 360 has all 512MB as shared memory on a single fast bus, while the Playstation has 256MB as system memory and 256MB as VRAM. I think it is possible for developers to use the Playstation's VRAM as extra system memory and the system memory as framebuffer but there is a performance hit because of the extra latency.

Yeah I had a 32MB Kyro 2 I think it was Sparkle branded and it faked hardware T&L through some driver hack, it actually beat my Geforce 3 Ti 200 in one or two old games like Halflife because it's TBR was so efficient.

Now that GPU choice makes more sense but I hope they'd choose a non-cell CPU this time and MORE ram.

its really a step backwards. if you want complex dynamic scenes z-buffer is more efficient. why do you think ati and nvidia use z-buffer? its not just to support d3d:P

what other choice do they have, ati is supposedly locked to microsoft for this and the next gen for HD consoles, and with what NV has done to the xbox and the ps3 i would not see any1 using it for a future console. the ati contract with MS is supposed to be one of the reasons why the wii only dose edtv (480p) and not hd by now as even the game cube was supposed to be able to be forced to do 720p run ok for some games (with a mod chip of course)

sony wants a concise dev platform so the powerVR is similar to the ps2 and gc/wii so that simplifies things and i would think that they would keep the cell but maybe have a higher clock and less cores as well as having all cores with full ppc functionality as that seams to be a stumbling point as only the main core can do some things but the 360 has 3 full ppc cores so there isnt the restriction on how u thread out

nvidia didnt screw up the gpu on the ps3, sony did. sony got what they asked for. their initial plan for ps3 was 2 cells in one box. that idea got scrapped and they got g70 because g80 or r520 would have been too late and expensive. if something was planned in advanced that would have never happened.

im not sure what is in the contracts but they should be able to do business with whatever company. it might have to do with licensing r500 intellectual property.

nothing to do with sony its the fact that poyphonic digital is being too anal about it now and trying to make it (imo) too realistic that its just took to damn long.. not sony's fault tho.. they are probably PISSED as it would have been one of the games to get a HELL of a lot of sales

gamecube made use of the ATI flipper chips which was originally designed by ArtX (ati bought them in 1999 or 2000) and Wii makes use of a slightly tweaked flipper version with higher clocks and eDram (called hollywood)

Sony really pisses me off. PSX was great, then they make the PS2.. crappy even in its day. SOFTWARE graphics engine (entirely). Rubbish CPU (300MHz) and a measly 32MB RAM. Making it worse Sony "invented" their own programming language devs had to learn. Devs hated the PS2 because it was a bastard to code for.

    Sony make PS3.

Devs get excited because Sony PROMISE it will be easy to code for and mention use of C++.

Devs start looking the PS3 over... whats this? Sony have backtracked on everything they promised, most notably yet again making their own retarded programming language thats a bastard to learn. Devs hit out, start making games for the 360.

I opted for a PS3 over a Xbox360 Elite. I kinda wish I didn't. The main games I bought the PS3 for (MGS, FF13, DMC) are coming out on the 360. I'm PISSED. Sony charge more than MS do for the games (I don't care if I have to switch disks) and their console costs a fortune. I patiently waited to get a good deal on a PS3 but £250 is still a lot to shell out on a console. Especially when I could of got a 360 Elite for £90 less that would of come with a extra controller and 3 extra games vs. the PS3 package. All I can say is Sony better damn deliver with the PS3 and make it last a good 3 years.

power VR is the company which more or less designed a fair number of intels integrated graphics processors. Power VR chips are VERY well selling.

umm their performance IS underwhelming though.

FF13 is better on the PS3 anyway. God of War 3 is also coming out next week so yet another reason to be a PS3 owner.

Don't forget you have to buy a lot of stuff just to make the 360 work online, while the PS3 has everything it needs AND free MP.
