PSP2 is rumored to be PowerVR

PSP1 has a very crappy 3D acceleration, in fact it has 2 gfx cores, designed completely by sony, and as scene in nearly every 3D PSP game, is a complete disaster.

This looks like it might even allow PwerVR to reenter the PC graphics market. Should be interesting to see if anything more comes out of it
Seems we made our greatest error when we named it at the start
for though we called it "Human Nature" - it was cancer of the heart

PowerVR, S3, ATI and NVIDIA on market. That would be a dream come true. But so far it doesn't look that good with NVIDIA trying to drop out...

Might take a while for PowerVR to reach any large PC market share, even if they do return. Sure would be cool, though

atleast sony is using real established tech and not making up its own crap. The Emotion engine was crap, the graphics synthasizer was crap and Cell is crap.

Why don't Sony just take the freaking Llano APU and make a console around it?? It will have pretty solid DX11 GPU(RV8x0 based) and a fast QC or if they like 3 core x86 chip, and will be easier to make titles that will be cross platform compatible.

TBDR method of rendering polygons today is useful/efficient for small-scale implementations where power and memory bandwidth factors are a major concern, related to the target performance. All modern immediate rasterizer architectures from ATi, NV and the few others, are already using advanced methods of hierarchical representations of the depth information, fast caching and real-time compression of the data. And with the advent of APIs like OpenCL and DirectCompute, the monstrous ALU power of the GPUs can be harnessed to perform advanced GFX tasks like SSAO and OIT much more efficient, bypassing the traditional graphics pipeline methods, treating the GPU as a pure massive parallel compute device.

because x86 means that people can run their OS'es and apps on it, and it would mean that some people would be playing PC games on their PlayStation.

Sorry, but hardware inside PS2 is far from crap. I don't really recall any console to last for this long and still offer this good graphics. Sure it's low res now, but Black looked damn nice. Same for all Burnout games and lets don't forget Gran Turismo 4 which looks really good for the console and game age.

doesn't change the fact that PS2 rendering + cpu hardware was overrated crap compared to xbox and gamecube

Heh intel actually uses some PowerVR chips as integrated GPUs on some chipsets(GMA500 in e.g. Poulsbo)

In 2012 there will probably be big competition with games on the web (games that can be runned in browsers).

I think both Microsoft and Google are working very hard on this.

Its already hard enough to code for the Cell, I doubt a PowerVR chip would make it any harder. Also, look at the Xbox360, its a PPC based system with an ATi R500 (there was not any other GPU like it out at the time). It shares nothing in common with a PC, but games are still ported between it and the PC.

i've played probably 20+ psp games and found the graphics to be quite adequate. the only game i've seen that was made poorly or the game system couldn't handle (your choice) was gta. for example everyone i showed ff7-2 to on my psp was amazed, even ppl that had most portable systems from the first gameboy thought it looked good.

xbox 360 cpu is a generic x86/x64 cpu
xbox 360 gpu is a radeon x1900 little modified to make a little count of dx10 effect.

Since when does PowerPC support x86 or x64?

This is true and some say was one of the reasons apple strayed from IBM as well on the G5 to Mac-intel transition ..........
