@ Movieman: I believe u have Raptors hooked up to ur sammy - to which controller may I ask? the ICH5-R or the SI3124?

Not sure which but there are 6 sata ports on the board..a group of 2 and a group of 4..
my old 36 gig raptor is in the lower on the group of two

ICH5R as suspected.. any chance u could tell me which model Raptors they are? device manager? esp interested in model number - ie urs might be WD360GD or WD360ADFD..

for any of u considering putting a Raptor in Sammy, there may be a chance it wont work.. I recently was trouble shooting an Abit IC7-Max3 - yes I know, totally diff mobo - but it has the same SB: ICH5R. There seems to be an incompatibility issue between the ADFD/AHFD (16MB cache) Raptors & the ICH5R! @ POST, it'll take forever to 'Detect IDE drives' & then it never will, so when u go to install windows for ie, it will say there are no HDDs to install to.. I am not the only person to have come across this problem.. I have confirmed that GD (8MB cache) Raptors *do* work - MMs work plus I grabbed a friends GD & tested on the IC7 aforementioned.. if anyone does have an ADFD Raptor working of the ICH5R, please post, then it would appear the prob is IC7 specific.. I have nooo idea if the VelociRaptors are compat

FYI: I contacted a friend at Intel today and asked him to ask around and if they came up with a tray or two of those Merom MP's sitting on a shelf or a tray or two of the sossaman 2330's to give me a yell and I think between us all we could take them off their hands and add some $$ to Intels bank account.
I'm figuring it's ( in their mind) such old tech they'd jump at the chance to turn them into $$..
And you KNOW there has to be some of them hanging around!

i'm now looking to build a sossaman since my q6600 sucks up almost 300w when overclocked. however, when i build this, i'll be killing two birds with one stone, so i have a few questions first (so excuse my n00bness). will there be any problem having this "quad" crunch at 100% while still being able to do daily desktop functions on this server platform? i don't think the lack of expansion slots will be a problem since it already has onboard video and sound, but i just need to crunch while being able to run excel/word and do all internet functions. also, what's the cheapest EATX case for this besides ghetto cardboard?

any help on finding the cheapest possible CPU's, heatsink, and memory? or does anyone want to get rid of theirs?

I use a USB sound card with no problems (one of these which are generic 6-channel C-Media 6206 chips, commonly found on eBay for about 20USD shipped). I spent some time on the ALSA mailing list and helped to get this working perfectly in Linux. The patch made it upstream for kernel 2.6.31. Someone else took the code and made it work on Mac OS X.

If you're set on using a PCI card then you'd have to dig up a Supermicro X6DLP-EG2/4G2 or the Tyan S5365 i7520SD since there aren't any PCI-X sound cards (well, there are some M-Audio PCI-X cards made for PowerMac G5, but these work in the 33/66 MHz PCI-X slots on the Mac and the PCI-X on the Intel SE7520BB2D2 is locked at 133 MHz only...)

Oh, and Dave, count me for 4 chips of whatever you can get from Intel. Honestly, I think you won't have any trouble at all selling off at least the first 100 chips, and if they're the Merom MP chips, then we'll see A LOT more of Sammy going around here on XS.

I've got an analog surround system and I'm not a fan of headphones on a desktop. Oddly enough, the code I used to get my sound card working was based off of the driver for the device you linked.

Somewhat OT: I was trying to find a firewire/USB card to go into the PCI-X slot, but I'm not having much luck finding anything. Pretty much the only stuff that I can find to put in there are SCSI RAID cards, which doesn't help me since I don't have any SCSI devices hanging around... :-(
