Sad Story, another reason to crunch :(

Guys, I know a lot of you don't know me. But I figured you'll should see this anyways since at the end of the day we all crunch for the same reason.

11/12 was a sad day for a family/group of people, and for the company I work for. One of our beloved employees passed away. Not only did he pass away, but he passed away because of Pancreatic Cancer at ONLY the age of 34. Struggled with it for three years and left behind his 4 year old daughter and his wife who was pregnant with his 2nd child who is due any day now.

Here are the letters that were sent from our world headquarters in Geneva at first announcing his loss, then the follow up email explaining his unfortunate event in more detail. Some text was left out to protect identities.

    Sent: Thursday, November 12, 2009 4:08 PM
    Subject: Loss of loved one

    Dear Colleagues,

It is with great sadness we share the news of the premature passing of our (employee name)

(his name) was part of the MSC family for many years and he will truly be missed.

For those who have asked, the funeral arrangements are below.

    Visitation
    Saturday and Sunday 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 at

Here is the follow up email with the details:

    Sent: Tuesday, November 17, 2009 10:01 AM

    Subject: TRUST FUND For

    Dear Colleagues

As You are aware from below email our colleague (his name) ( 34) Passed away after 3 years of struggling fight with Pancreatic Cancer .

His remarkable dedication until last month when he was still attempting to come to work shows his dedication but more importantly his will and fight to battle this devastating disease.

What the announcement of his Funeral is not mentioning is that (his name) is leaving behind a wife , a 4 year hold daughter and a new child that will be born shortly .

The (last name) family has opened a Trust, our intention is to contribute to the fund as generous as we can.

Mine is just an informal request that I hope will touch each individual, therefore I’m asking all of the Office managers you to gently pass the news of (his name) death along with his story so that the Job he contribute to build a stronger MSC until the eve of his death will not be done in vain and his children will be able to finish their studies thanks to MSC Family Contribution .

Please feel free to spread the request amongst you relatives , friend , Customers, vendors as every penny will really count !

If you would want to make a donation please send a check to the HR department in NY addressed to Mediterranean Shipping Company indicating in the memo field (his name) Fund”. We will then deliver all amount collected to (his name) family.

Thanks for your attention in this matter

I am in no way shape or form asking for a donation. I just wanted to share this and with detail because cancer is one of the reasons we are crunching and daily it takes more lives. this man was 34 years old and left behind a growing family. I won't say it brings tears to my eyes, but it sure as hell had a affect on my work day and even now. other people in the office must have seen this email and thats it. But I know what this is, I have over paid my electric bill since February because of it, I have spent thousands and also received thousands of hard earned dollars in hardware from other great members who are also familiar with this. It's CANCER, and it took the life of this young man. Guys, just keep crunching, I ain't never effin' stopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My grief/best wishes goes out to him and his family. I will be confirming details tomorrow and sending out whatever I can spare for my donation as employee of the company I am.

My best to you CP. I lost my manager a bit ago to prostate cancer. He was not only my manager, but my friend. Like you, it just made me more determined than ever to keep crunching away.

Most of us that do this became involved after the loss of a family member or friend. That's unfortunate but true.

I am very sorry to hear about this. I hope the best for his family.

You said this really changed you, I know how you feel. When it happened to me I had the harsh realization that cancer doesn't just happen to someone else.

That is very true Dave. Thanks for showing your sympathy. As I gather some responses I am going to get some of them over to work and maybe hope we can show them to the family. Show them that there is a large group of dedicated people out there that are trying to make a difference.

Most things you do in life you lose interest over time.
I have not felt that with this work.
On the contrary, I feel stronger about it now then when i started.

Hey CP, just got done browsing over at TPU. Congrats on your promotion to the captain's chair of the TPU team! I know you will do fine there.

Back OT, I fully agree with Dave. I think I get more motivated to crunch the longer I go into this. I've done many things in my life, had hobbies come and go, but crunching has really hooked me.

I think about the many things I have just pizzed my money away on. With crunching, I see my contribution and know it will help the world. Pretty easy to sleep at night with that.....

It is always extra hard when kids are involved, loosing their dad. Kudos to your company for helping the family.

Cancer is always around. Some sad news I saw:
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen diagnosed with cancer
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, more than 25 years after he was treated for Hodgkin's disease, a spokesman at his company Vulcan Inc. told CNN on Monday.
Always thought he was a neat guy for all the science projects he donated money to. He beat it once hopefully he will again.

So far this year world wide:
15 million instances of cancer with almost 7 million deaths.

Hey there Chicken Patty. Such a freakin sad situation that is for sure at your work. I feel so bad for the mother. 34 years old and with a growing family is way too damn young to die. I am turning 37 this year and I too have a family so when I read this.....well it brought a tear to my eyes that is for sure. Had a co-worker die at my work as well. He was older though but still had a family too. He tried to work to get enough hours in to give his family his pension even when he looked like he was already dead. He did not make it and they did not give his family the pension and he only needed another week to qualify. He complained of a sore back (he had liver cancer) so his wife rubbed his back to make him feel better and that's when he took his last breath. Happened last year....wrote about it on my website here back then.. http://www.circleofleviathan.com/sit...pic.php?t=1466

Thanks Bob, yeah I think I will do fine too! I got a great team over there. Guys have been great and show tons of dedication. You also are correct, sleeping at night has been a lot easier since I started crunching, just makes me feel a better person. I'm going to speak to my Office Manager tomorrow to see if I can put together a little power point or maybe just a lengthy and detailed email about what WCG is and how I contribute. If so I'll get all these posts and the ones at TPU and put them in there. I would really like for this to happen and if the family sees it, at least they know people care.

    You'll think that's a good idea?

That's a touching story bro. I have been fortunate enough not to loose anybody near me yet. however, just seeing these things makes me feel sooo bad, I can't imagine the pain one must feel when loosing a loved one or someone close to them.

CP, I think a good short few paragraphs on what we do is better than a book. Perhaps start out with the little few paragraphs, then go into more detail if they want to read on. You may hook them in the first few sentences when you reflect on what your co-worker meant to you, and that there is the thing we call WCG/folding/crunching that they could help with. I think there's nothing better than a direct, shared experience to motivate folks. The tragedy of losing your co-worker is that experience. Also, for what it's worth, it's good that you are finding a way to make something good come out of a very bad thing. Kudos.

After I finished my visit to TPU, I started a little team out on Tech Reaction. I am crunching one quad there. Some of the early posts I made there might give you some material to work with and more ideas. Here's a link to my first post over there. You're more than welcome to swipe any text you like, or just use it as an idea. There are plenty of posts here too. Just browse around.

If you want, feel free to post up a draft of what you want to send. I would be more than happy to help with wording and content if you want. I'm sure the others here would help too.

    My best,
    Bob

Thanks Bob, I wasn't planning on sending them a book. I was actually thinking of a few paragraphs. I have heard of Tech Reaction, I'll go ahead and check that link you provided when I come back from work. I just check out the forums in the morning, but don't got much time to read. I really appreciate all the help you are offering bro, means a lot to me man

From personal losses, through on-line acquaintances, to news like this of someone, with whom I have no connection and living half a world away, losing their battle and leaving a family behind. It all blurs into one with me. I feel the need to try and help. I cannot do a lot because of financial constraints but I keep on doing what I can for as long as I can in the hope that between us we can beat this.

I am very sorry to hear that, I will definitely prey and of course, CRUNCH for the family. Recently, one of my orchestra directer's mother passed away due to cancer, and coincidentally, the other directer's mother-in-law passed away from cancer also.

I wish well to all the families whose lives are changed from cancer.
