HighTest, Redphil, all,
As you have mentioned, "everything's fine" with W7 and x38/48. While it works out of the box, it doesnt mean that all of our components are up to date.
even with microsoft update, you will still need to download and install the Chipset INF, the Intel Matrix Storage manager, the LAN driver, and probably the Marvell driver (dont use it, so...)
And as previously explained through this thread, Intel doesnt seem to know how to make an INF updater that works as advertised or expected. To install the chipset drivers, you will need to download the package, extract it with 7-zip or winRAR then go to
start>right click computer>manage>device manager>view devices by connection>expand ACPI x64 based PC>expand Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System>expand PCI bus
every item within the list below Intel ICH8R/ICH9R/ICH10R/DO/PCH SATA RAID Controller can be updated via the files in the folder you extracted from the INF package.
each will need to be updated individually: right click>update driver software>browse my computer>find the folder and select it>tick Include subfolders>next.
do this for each item, some will require restarts, but you can wait until all have been updated for the restart
