hehe yeah, lower Fstop can also be called faster len's/aperture because it usually allows faster shutter speeds.

Yes, the thin DoF is caused by a mix of a fast (wide) aperture, focal length, focus distance and sensor size.

Because I'm focusing extremely close to it and using the lens wide open, the DoF is thin. If I had used an even longer focal length the DoF would have become thinner due to a change in the field of view.

Using a DoF calculator and guessing how close I was focusing, this should be about the DoF obtained.

    Subject distance - 12 in

    Depth of field
    Near limit - 12 in
    Far limit - 12 in
    Total - 0.09 in

In front of subject - 0.04 in (50%)
    Behind subject - 0.04 in (50%)

    Hyperfocal distance - 2639.7 in
Circle of confusion - 0.019 mm

Marin inspired me to try something new with my camera, I am still picking up on the settings and what not but I am having fun exploring with this D5000.

Nice image Tarowah however the bokeh is very distracting.
    What lens are you using?
You can try using some Gaussian blur on the background to smoothen it up a little.

This is the Nikkor kit lens the 18-55 that comes with the D5000, I am still a complete n00b when it comes to processing the images, all I use is the Nikon software that came with the camera so I am not sure how to add Gaussian blur. All I did to the image is sharpen it a little and then add a bump of color saturation.

That's not a bad kit-lens. It is easy to do in PhotoShop but not sure about ViewNX.

    Here are some other settings:

    Exposure Time = 1/5"
    F Number = F4.5
    Exposure Bias Value = -1EV
    Flash = Off
    Focal Length = 18mm

I like the subject, that's a very dramatic sky. I would perhaps have upped the ISO a little as well as opened the lens to F3.5, the max that you can with the 17-70mm. Although it's generally not advised to shoot with such a low f-stop when dealing with landscapes, when shooting in the dark you sometimes have to make sacrifices. In this case, it'll enable you to increase the shutter speed which will make it easier for you to prevent blur.

This shot (for some reason) gave me troubles. It was windy as hell(and still shaking on my tripod), overcast, and i was trying out my new lens-hood and 1st CPL. The hood and improperly adjusted CPL probably lead to the dreary look as well.
