This is starting to get really frustrating, been waiting for a Battlefield 2 replacement for over 5 years now. But they just seem to f*ck up every release with some stupid gimmicks. Huge hopes for OFP2 which was moved onto waiting for MW2 which seems to be full of fail.....now I guess I'll wait for BF BC 2 and pray for the FPS gods to be mercyful this time. If not it's time to sell my hardware and buy a laptop or a netbook and play flash games & solitare.

From what i listened to, they are partnering with steam, and you will have to have steam and use a matchmaking service to get into the game. I for one just canceled my pre order, i hate steam, and i will not install it on my computer.

Infinity Ward Dropped a huge Bomb.

    http://kotaku.com/5384057/new-modern...e-pc-community

Here's the score: by building up its own matchmaking service riding shotgun with Steam, "you can get in and play with players your same rank," Bowling said. However, "You're completely reliant on IWNet and there is no dedicated server or server list. You rely on IW Net for matchmaking and your games, but you still have your private matches."

The level of control over those matches allows players to set a wide array of parameters and rules for the game. But community features such as clans, and the high level of customization available in hosting a modded game or custom map on one's own dedicated server, face an uncertain future, if not their end outright.

"Custom content, after the fact, keeps the game alive for us a lot longer," one of Bowling's questioners said.

"This is the first time we've ever done something like this, obviously," Bowling said, "and I know the team has huge plans for what IWNet develops into, and this is just the beginning. It's hard for me to speak personally towward IWNet, because that is a code heavy project."

Bowling reminded that this method of multiplayer delivery also allows Infinity Ward "a lot more control and structure for the PC version. From a development standpoint, it's very good on how we can access and update the PC community."

But before this is taken as the definitive end of modding and custom maps, Bowling clearly said "I don't have those answers yet," when asked further about how IWNet would affect that aspect of PC Modern Warfare play.

The entire conversation is archived here, and Bowling comes in at the 1:39:00 mark (that's one hour, 39 minutes). If this matters to you I definitely encourage listening to all of what he has to say before reacting.

But the news is not being taken well. The BASHandSlash guys referred to the vehemence in the chatlog running concurrent with the program, and terms such as "Black Saturday" and "a day of infamy" are being thrown around. "They've made Jesus cry," is another reaction, particularly from the competitive PC community whose future also is affected. "The server community is what's made us. It's what defined us," says Josh Pickler of planetmedalofhonor.com "IW.NET is getting the PC community to turn into consoles. You're trying to re-write our history."

Bowling was steadfast in telling BASHandSlash that, for the whole of the community, IWNet will be a benefit.

"It's definitely going to be a change. It's going to be a very different setup than what we're previously used to in the Call of Duty franchise for the PC," In the long term it's going to help the community. It changes the way and how we're able to update and support the PC version."

It definitely bears watching, and keep in mind the story could change as Infinity Ward releases more information on IWNet.

    Just Canceled My Pre- Order...

Absolute failure to the PC community.

***EDIT Didn't See A thread on this yet in Search, Lock it or Merge it if this is doubled... So frustrated at this, not really observant.

    *******EDIT #2

Make a Difference, voice your opinion, and sign the petition. Infinity ward just deleted the thread with 150pages of sigs... bad form.. here is a link to the online petition, that was linked in that thread.

Doesn't actually bother me that much. It seems like most of the CoD4 servers are super hardcore no 203/no martyrdom/no fun servers that run with 64 players and the admins yell at you if you ever move while not crouched or fire without using iron sights.

There wont be 64 player servers anyway when MWF2 releases. The PC version will be EXACTLY like the console versions.

It's going to be worse on the PC though since we'll have people with P4's and crappy upload hosting games, and that's the vast majority of PC gamers too.

I've already cancelled my pre-order. What's funny is if this change had anything to do with piracy, they just promoted it.

    Great job there Infinity Idiot.

Steam is no problem for me - I love it as a content distribution system, I love the Friends part, I love the prices of games on it, and I love not mucking about with discs. Sure, I've occasionally run across a few problems, but nothing re-running the Steam installer in repair mode or deleting client.blob didn't fix.

Well that's a bummer,I hope that there is a good side to this but from what is stated untill now I really can't see it for the med+ gamer,If they wanna do smth good for the PC version they should enforce an anti-cheating method specific to the game, organize more tournaments or hell give us some PC-Console compatibility online.

If TreyArch could actually build something with equivalent gameplay or get the engineers responsible for that to defect that'd be golden. Its not like you need that good gameplay response on consoles.. which is what they are catering to, the input lag is ridiculous anyways on them.
Yeah if they don't fix this... then i m going to Battlefield badcompany 2, because that game, is actually pc driven.

    Quake Live FTW!
Fu*k this ty ass mainstreaming of games, all they promote now is retardness and low reaction/hand eye coordination with autoaiming being present in PC games too, give us more tournaments on PC,invest money in the market and you will be rewarded,in the last 3 years the average prizes in FPS games have dropped instead of increasing as they did since 1999 onwards.
PCGaming is becoming more and more of a joke with no b@lls developers, greedy ass hardware manufacturers which want to tear the skin out of us for money but without a big support to the devs or the community.

Guys... whoever cares enough, register at the IW forums and sign the petition to bring dedicated servers back - we have over three thousand signatures between two online petitions.

I have posted many times on what I believe is the naivety of pre-ordering a game, IW simply could have (and should have on their behalf) stone-walled this news out until release. If that had of happened I think the level of vitriol would have been magnified times 10.

This says it best of all, two servers canceled for me as well as about 30 pre-orders for the game itself.

More like the way games are made, with these sweatshop shoddy code tree's with 100 monkeys all working on little pieces... EA style. I mean, granted it is easier to code for set hw.. but your not making the games for your clientele, your dictating.. so simple thing is to show them where the money is.. and that is meeting our needs. Don't cave, you don't owe them anything, just don't buy the game. and support those who support the community.

Yeah, I am in uproar about this as well. I went from super excited for this game to come out/fan of IW to immediately hating IW as a company and refusing to buy the product. Shady bastards waited till 1 month before release to say this crap too. Un-freaking believable.

Tip to any other company making a game, the largest margin of torrenters are the pc market, you start screwing them over, your gonna start seeing an increase. This is not the way to treat your gamers, you make what they want, not what you want, idiots. I'm done with IW.

You know, i wouldn't be as mad if they had ran a poll for the pc market to find out whether they wanted match making or dedicated.
But they didnt, they didnt give a , and that means I dont give a either, about their game.

But why? I cannot help to wonder why would anyone do that? is there ANY benefit of not having a dedicated server? I just can't wrap my mind around that.

Of course there's a benefit. It stops piracy. People only pirate games that they actually have a reason for playing.
