was referring to just performance. so those are some nice bonuses. i think will make a great upgrade for HTPCs, especially if they can get some without all that DVI crap, and a single slot cooler that can still be keeping it near silent. (but will probably be done by the 5750)

on a side note, i am very happy with the real midrange products, with the 4000 series and prior, you had the stuff for 300$ budgets and higher (4850+), or under 100$ budgets (46XX and below). now we see really good performers in the middle range that can play games very well, and not burn up any PSUs or wallets.

    800SP boooooooooooo

No reason to grab this over a 4890 really. They should of matched at the very least 4870 specs. Even a gtx 260 smokes this thing.

Hmm... I've see them bottlenecked by 3.75GHz i7 CPUs in some tests, so I think it is the platform that is the limitation not the GPU

So your saying this is a good upgrade over a 4870? This just a bait and switch industry. We give you DX11 and we cut the memory bus, the PCB, and also make a cheaper card to produce. Tell me where Im getting more for my money? This just like the i5 we make more, you get less senario.

Maybe you should put your pitchfork back in storage until you actually see how the card performs? Just a suggestion.

WOW, I was expecting $200 launch price. I will def not going 5850 then for my HTPC.
    HTPC - AMD Phenom II 555 Unlocked(4cores) - 4GB Gskill - AMD HD 5850 - Avermedia Duet - Harman Kardon avr247 - Surround Sound (Infinity Beta 50's, 10's, 360, and ed a2-300) - Samsung 46"

Desktop Powerhouse PC - Gathering dust due to high usage of HTPC as general pc now

People who bought the 4870 recently are probably not the one's who will be upgrading soon. Those that bought 4870 when it was released will probably be looking at 5870 or 5850.

Let's see how they perform before judging them too harshly.

I'm quite impressed, a teraflop of power for a little over 100 dollars, can't argue with that.

Im all for progression but it would be nice if they gave us more for our money instead of just basing next gen parts off the old series performance and price. Give back some of those 40nm fruits is what I say, or there is no real incentive to upgrade.

What in the world are you talking about? This is how the midrange cards have ALWAYS been - basically the same performance as the high end cards of the last gen. All these cards are of course based off the older architecture, but with refinements + added features like DX11 and what not. Considering you're getting DX11 + lower power consumption + more overclocking headroom over the previous cards for the same price, and most likely the same performance, they're priced right where they should be.

You go buy the HD5870 then. Leave thse cards to us who care for something else than the max FPS in games.

this looks to be very close to a 4870, same # of SPs, faster clock, slower ram. and at a price close to a 4870, but will also come with DX11 to make up the difference. this is an upgrade only if you want DX11 or have something lower than a 4850.

factor in this card can probably play ANY game in the next year at 1680x1050 with decent eye candy, looks like its going to be super popular for people who didnt go for a 4000 card.

I'm sure you realise that HD4870 and HD5770 are two products aimed to different market segments, don't you?

    The replacement for HD4870, it's the HD5870... I don't think HD4650 was a good upgrade over HD3870, too.

The only thing that can save these cards is price. If priced less they can be a good option. It would of been nice to have a performance boost to at least make these more atractive than the 4850/70/90. Thats all Im saying. If I couldnt afford a 5850/70 I would still of liked to be able to buy a product better than the 4800 series for around the same price. If that was the case these would be golden.

There is a great divide between 5770 160$ and 5850 260$. We need something around the 200-210$ mark, maybe a 5830 with a 1440sp cypress core and 1gb 128bit memory interface. That would be GOLDEN! Enen a 1280sp core would be good.

Why in the world would any business do that to themselves?
No one puts a product out there that is priced similar to a previous product but the new one performs substantially better.

Where is it? That would be icing on the cake. Right now Nvidia is unable to compete because ati cards are so damn cheap to produce. A 5830 is a nail in the coffin.

LE parts usually come out right before a product is EOL.
