Which manufacturer is going to be ready with 5850/5870 blocks?

Another thing to consider dean.. or gabe.. or anyone whose on the ball with unisinks... ASUS has announced their TOP version of the 5870 (and 5850 later I assume) which will allow software voltage tweaks.. now this might mean non-reference PCB which puts the full-block option a pain for both you and the consumer, but a uni-sink is a lot better approach. Not to mention, it allows adding a fan onto the vrm area for additional cooling if needed...

correct me if I'm wrong, but no full-cover gpu that I've seen yet has flow over the VRM's

Danny at DTek invented the term Unisink. (Correct me if I am wrong Danny) but didn't "uni" in unisink meant universal? How close are we today of a universal heatsink for VGA?

O, I always thought "uni" referred to one. To distinguish from the sticky heatsinks.

Anyways, the point I really wanted to make was that the proliferation of revisions and models is making this VGA market insanely difficult to cater to.

O, i don't disagree one bit. It would be nice if they didn't have to change PCB reference designs every 2 weeks. It kindof defeats the purpose of having a reference design.

That's about as universal as they can get.

it's too early to tell. Right now the ATI 5870 has limited quantities. My thought is you may see them in around the first week or the second week of Oct.

The problem with the unisinks are that by the time you buy the GPU block and then the matching unisink, you've mostly likely spent as much as just buying a full cover block. I say forget the unisinks and just go for full coverage. Sure the GPU only blocks are going to be more compatable, but then you have to direct a fan at your card to cool off everything else which normally looks kinda weird.

BTW, anyone have pics of what the 5870's heatsink looks like under the shroud? I'm wondering if it is like the 4870 where you can leave the stock plate with fan on to cool the memory and VRMs while a GPU block covers the core.

unisink and MCW60 for GTX285 $68.00

FC block $112.00

Thats a $44.00 difference. That will just about buy you a MCR320-QP, so there is a bit of savings going to a unisink, but they do have their downsides.

I have nothing against this one, and i can see where it would be nice for CPU blocks and what not. A little smaller footprint.

Uhhh... no. As proven above, you have not almost spent as much.

Not to mention that once you buy the GPU block then from that point on, ALL you have to spend is about $30-40 for a new unisink.. and possibly 5-10 (or free) for another bracket to fit the GPU block to that card

And who says you HAVE to have a fan? Most will work fine with just the airflow inside the case, but UNLIKE full-cover gpu, you actually HAVE the option to put a fan on ANYWHERE on the block if you want even more cooling

I wanted to bring water as close as possible to VRM's.
