the retail chip will probably have a higher multi than this, Intel aren't stupid enough to put a CPU at 2.4GHz in the high end consumer market.

EE has always unlocked multi, but im not really interested into paying 1000€, if i can get something cheaper and get the same performance.

If theres a 2.4ghz Xeon gulftown for ~500-600€ i take that every time over the EE.

Nehalem is powerful as it is with 8 threads, 12 will be overkill, 16 is just unnecessary.

Is there going to be enough graphics horsepower by then to make it all work? It seems Nvidia and AMD/ATI are LAGGING.

I want 2560x1600 DX10 Crysis at 120fps with 16xAA

if we were all running servers at home, I'd say yes.
but since desktop applications and games rarely stray past dual CPU optimalisation, I definitely agree with the 8 cores/16 cores is major overkill;
I'd rather have a speedier quad core, or blazing fast dual core

LOL? That's the stock EE cooler for Westmere? Finally nice to see Intel getting away from those orb style coolers, at least for the EEs.

Who knows, maybe Intel might be competing with the likes of Thermalright one day.

I'd rather have a speedier quad core, or blazing fast dual core

lets face the facts, single threaded performance is hitting a wall. the only way to get past this is many core.

How can you tell?
Maybe it was just a quick & dirty run, set a high voltage and bench. I do the same, especial when i have no desire to play for ages to run a certain benchmark.

Hexa-core Intel Gulftown moved to 6.4GHz

Intel is not expected to launch its first hexa-core desktop processor until next year, but engineering samples of the 32nm Gulftown CPU is already out in the wild. One of the have found its way into the hands of overclocker Shamino, and he of course overclocked it to the very limit. Using liquid nitrogen and a pretty terrifying operating voltage of 2.02V all six cores were clocked to nearly 6.4GHz for a quick screenshot.

With the cores clocked at 5.9GHz the system completed one round of 3DMark Vantage Performance to measure the CPU performance. The result was 51,177 points, which you can compare to the CPU score of the current Performance Profile world record at 32,328 points.

Intel seems to have come a long way with the new manufacturing process, months before the actual launch of Gulftown and at the same time there doesn't seem to be many problems with performance of its first six-core CPU.
