Don't get me wrong, it is a nice card. But I was expecting more, something like the jump from the 3xxx series to 4xxx. Certainly see no reason to get one if you already have a GTX275 or higher card, unless you want DX11 support and Eyefinity.
well from the Anandtech review, the AA is turned off in game for ATI cards on Batman:AA and can't be enabled, so in their review they left it off for all cards.

Seems PCPER results are not accurate, according to AnandTech, they can't test this game with AA on ATi cards.
Batman: Arkham Asylum is another brand-new PC game, and has been burning up the review charts. It’s an Unreal Engine 3 based game, something that’s not immediately obvious from just looking at it, which is rare for UE3 based games.

NVIDIA has put a lot of marketing muscle in to the game as part of their The Way It’s Meant to Be Played program, and as a result it ships with PhysX support and 3D Vision support. Unfortunately NVIDIA’s influence has extended to its anti-aliasing abilities too, as its in-game selective AA abilities only work on NVIDIA’s cards. AMD’s cards can perform AA on the game, but only via traditional full screen anti-aliasing, which isn’t nearly as efficient. Because of this, this is the only game we will not be using AA on, as doing so produces meaningless results given the different AA modes used.

Fair enough. Still scores for 5870 are disappointing with GTA IV at 2560x1600. I was hoping it'd hit 60FPS, instead, it gets about 3 more FPS than a 285. Only 285 in an SLI configuration or 5870 in CrossFire breaks 60.

Looking at these results, if I was a 4870 or 285 owner I'd just go SLI or CrossFire.

Grabbed an XFX one from NCIX. They're selling for 429 (Canadian). Got the express shipping, so hopefully I get to play with it soon. Bye bye 8800 GTS 320!

I sold my 4890 for a 5870... now i can get nearly twice the performance with less idle power and near identical load power. I live in a hot climate and having more hot air blowing on my legs isn't my idea of a good time.

It also seems that you are picking out the benches where the 5870 does the worst and using them to judge the card.

On AVERAGE, it scores in between the 4870x2 and GTX295... the GTX285 isn't even in the same league IMO. Once the drivers are tuned it will be even less so.

Exactly, these were review copy drivers. Check again in 2-3 weeks, and we'll get 5 more fps.

It just so happens that these are the games that I don't get excellent performance at 2560x1600 in. That's the only reason why I'm picking them out. Sure I see the 5870 do quite a bit better in other benches like Left 4 Dead but if I'm already getting >60FPS with a 285 that does not entice me to upgrade.

You still cherry picked some results from games that have questionable things done w/ regards to performance for ATI cards... and even from other reviews, its obvious the 5870 beats the GTX 285 pretty significantly

The card is slotted quite well between the 4870X2 and the GTX295 it seems. In games where CF/SLI scale really well, the GTX 295 seems to do better. When it doesn't, the 5870 is better. Plus, don't ignore the reviews showing *MINIMUM* FPS - in a lot of the reviews that do, the 5870 is > 2x faster at min fps a lot of the time than the 285 so it's pretty noticeable for actual performance (an average FPS of 60 is nice... until you start hitting 25 fps occasionally and the game stutters).

Anywho, wouldn't be surprised with new drivers + when DX11 paths are available, the lead increases significantly. If anyone remembers, when the GTX 280 first came out, the 9800GX2 appeared to be doing better in a lot of games, especially with average and max FPS numbers, but as drivers improved, it was obvious which card provided a better experience..

min fps is the decider for me....as a rule of thumb next gen should excel, and max fps is largely irrelevant.

some are rebranded, but mostly no... and yes they do offer warranty after exchange as long as you dont break it while doing it... then you keep the warranty

    5870 ~ 4870 x2. If one had a 295, 5870 may not be much of a upgrade but 5870 x2 would certainly be one.
