Catalyst drivers just uninstall themselves and then install the new ones...no drama, no rebooting, nothing. They just work and have been for a long time now.

Every time I've tried "over-the-top" installs with CCC I get problems like no crossfire or no CCC. I don't do it and I don't recommend it for nVidia either (I used to get BSODs after over-the-top installs with nVidia hardware).

On XP, yes, on Vista, you don't need to do a single reboot, just update install on the old drivers and you're ready.
On Win7 it's the same as on Vista, though the CIM (Catalyst Install Manager) has had some issues, so I've usually used the commandline installer instead.

I've been installing new drivers over old ones ever since I'm using Win7 64bits.

The installer finds the old version of every component (CCC, Display Driver, ATI HD Sound Driver, Install Manager, etc) and tells you it will replace them with the new one.
The screen becomes black once when installing the Display Driver since it needs to unload the old, install the new, then load it again. No reboot needed at all, and i can fire any game right after the process.

Never had any issue and it always maintains my profile config (except Overdrive), so ATI did an excellent job with the install routine.

I don't have CF so no idea there, but honestly, more than half the problems I usually read about ATI and Nvidia drivers are multi-gpu related.
That is not really stable, isn't it?

    Exactly!

That is why the original group splintered! Some didn't agree on the direction of the Franchise...

Operation Flashpoint is years ahead of ARMA, it's playability and action is superb. And thats why they left.. Graphics don't make a game, they just sell'em!

I noticed increases in Vantage and Crysis Warhead. Specially in Vantage there were areas of the benchmark that ran better then with the previous driver.

I have ben doing installs ontop of old with new for quite some time now. I only need reboots in XP and Win 7 64 has never needed a reboot. I have never had any major issues. I am running 9.9 now but never tested for performance diff's. Those results look nice, thanks for the post.

That link shows what you should do if you were previously running non ATI hardware, or if you were running a legacy version of ATI's drivers.

I haven't had to reboot ever since they released the Cat Install Manager.

1 or 2 percent of total volume like intel likes to do. And with the trouble intel seems to be having with they're attempt, it [32nm] doesn't look like a very mature process.
AMD has always been quicker to a mature process and crossover point, so by the time intel gets their issues and volume sorted out, AMD won't be very far behind at all.

Very true.......my Vista install process acts much like what's linked below:

why a system reboot is not required after installing an ATI Catalyst graphics driver within Microsoft Windows 7.

My Vista install acts just like updating drivers in Win 7. In fact, my lone holdout XP install rarely asks for reboots anymore with driver updates.

Really I see Q6600 and E8400 in the RE 5 comparison... if you make a comparison , such as this driver make it on the same platform always... I wonder what ATI really changed as the Min fps seem to go up so high with some reports...

can 10pts even be considered an improvement? not saying it isnt much, but you can get a 10pt difference from the time of day it seems.
