Following that logic, I suppose you'll call GT200 a 240 core GPU (like how Nvidia's PR department does)?

RV870 seems to be RV770 scaled by a factor of 2, with maybe some internal tweaks, DX11 compliance and the ability to output to up to six monitors. I hardly doubt it has anything to do with dual core GPU's or whatever (and pardon my tone here) hogwash they've come up with on ATIforum.

I must say though, judging by the size of RV770 and its TDP, I don't see how AMD can put two of these GPU's onto a single card. This GPU is getting awfully close towards R600 in terms of size and power consumption.

I'm starting to think that the GPU powering HD5870 should be referred to as R800, with maybe two other slower/smaller/cooler chips (RV870?) powering an R880 (2xRV870). Oh well, we can only confirm once reviews come out.

1 or 2 percent of total volume like intel likes to do. And with the trouble intel seems to be having with they're attempt, it [32nm] doesn't look like a very mature process.
AMD has always been quicker to a mature process and crossover point, so by the time intel gets their issues and volume sorted out, AMD won't be very far behind at all.

    Looks like a black HD2900XT.

Well if you call gt200 a 240 core gpu, you have to call rv770/790 an 800 core gpu, G80 a 128 core gpu, and rv870 a 1600 core gpu. People have always thought of each shader/stream processor as a "core" thx in part to marketing. Cypress is dual core because of two identical shader arrays consisting of 10 simd clusters each (like a rv770 but modernized w/ dx11 @ 40nm) TMU, ROP, MC Logic shared, working as "SFR crossfire on a die". This is only my opinion... so no the logic does not correlate between calling rv870 "dual core" and gt200 "240 core". What correlates is rv870 = dual core, rv770/790 = single core, gt200 = single core

With the difference that it will perform good and it's not late to the party this time

But it could be close as far as power consumption goes... I guess we will see with reviews, but 330mm˛ on 40nm, 2.1B transistors, that's going to consume a sh*t load of power!

TSMC 40nm is not that bad, power consumption-wise.
HD4770 (40nm) was running at silly low power - I wouldn't be surprised if HD5870 was similar to HD4890 in power consumption.
You were not supposed to see this.

Hardware Canucks state 190W, which isn't bad

Since it's 190w would that mean the 5870x2 would be nearly double the power consumption? So running dual 5870x2's would need almost 800w for themselves!

Guess that's the reason why the X2 is coming later. They'll have to bin the chips for low power consumption.

Yes,one HD5870 is on "Dual ATI Radeon HD 4890 GPU Class" level... Not surprising considering the doubling of the specs over RV770.

Ok,let's wait and see that one 5870 scores as 2 4890s in 2 weeks . The whole event was centered on Eyefinity and Evergeen technology and due to some formal NDA stuff they listed Two 4890 to show in what class will the next performance GPU slide in. The same class as 4890CF. Why would AMD put a number on the screen for the 4890 cards that are on the market 6 months already and do it at the event that is all about Evergreen family?! Use your gray cells guys... We all know what numbers 4890 put in this test and now we know what class will Cypress be in. Same class.

I don't doubt that one HD-5870 might be as fast as two HD-4890, I doubt this score referes to one HD-5870... That's two pairs of shoes

What does a pair of 4890 does have to do with Eyefinity or any of the stuff they showed yesterday? It's all about Evergreen tech. Even that score.

Yeah because we are all gonna run out and buy six Dell UltraSharp 30" LCDs to compliment our 5870...

It's a showcase of Eyefinity, yes, it is, BUT when you look closely they are just showing that these monitors are all driven by one card. Take a look at the display on the top right, I think what we see there is a Phenom II OC-event and on most displays you can see videos (see the one the top middle? I think I remember that one, wasn't it crazy wall-drawing?). What do they have to do with HD-5870 or Eyefinity?!

I therefore think that the score and everything we see in the bottom left display is ONE video. See the buttons (close, minimize, maximize) in the top right of the display?

Man I really hate when people put words (or opinions) in my mouth (or my post).

I just said that was the score of two 4890, nothing to do with a 5870 score. The picture even shows 2 cards. YOU are the one pointing that AGAIN!
