Hope all this hype is true, ATI doing some big things now, nvidia is still quiet as a mouse, i have a feeling they are going to be in trouble again.

Only a few processors are more competitive or near that level... high-end denebs @ 3.4g+, E8xxx @ 4.0g+, high-end yorkfields @ 3.4g+, and i7's @ 3.0g+. These are all top of the line processors, so your Q6600 @ 3.6 should be good for quite some time, and will hang in there with the denebs, nehalems & yorkfields, and likely outlive the E8xxx's.

Im just transferring to a p45 board i got on the cheap, Gigabyte UD3P. the IP35 Pro is getting retired, and will be kept for a long time..it was afterall the last good ABIT(rip) board. A keeper

its hard to believe these chips came out in late 2006..and are still ticking like champs on most set ups for people.

will hold me off until early 2011 when westmere is out, or that rumored AMD monolithic 12 core beast..drool

might be able to squeeze a bit more with the Gigabyte over the ip35. The 4phase on the ip35, and the vdroop problems kept the chip back a bit.

I don't think it is a monolithic core, but rather a MCM and is a server product, not being targetted for the desktop.

Since these cards are over 2TFlops, wouldn't it be possible to have a 2000SP @ 625MHz for the 5850, and 2000SP at 750MHz for the 5870?

    yes

but speculated Tflops are 2 for the x850 and 2.4 for the x870

which means 2000 shaders would be at 500 mhz... which is kinda lame imo... would mean they have good yields but probably not great binning

i'd much rather have 1600 shaders at 625 for the x850 and then 1600 at 750 (maybe 800 or something) for the x870

there have also been rumored to be two versions of the x870 level card with perhaps one seeing 2000 shaders at 750 but WHO KNOWS that personally would seem to complicate things instead of just making a bunch of super binned products

1600 SP @700 MHz for Cypress Pro and @850 MHz for Cypress XT ? Should be doable with the current (more mature & higher yielding) 40 nm process.

Nope, at least not for the 5870.

If running 3 screens with eyefinity support, what kind of gpu ram would be needed, I think 1gb wont cut it?

I play MMOG, so that kind of support makes me really like what is coming.

Running games on Triple Display is nothing new,it's been here for 4-5 years atleast with products like Matrox Triple Head being some of the best price/quality and 1GB Vram was more than enough for most MMORPG games, the only ones I think may need more horespower are Age Of Conan and Aion.

    I wouldn't call 250 Euro cheap...

Yes, it's been there a few years, but getting something like that for free is better than paying, don't you think?

    Triplehead to go is a semi-professional device,it's price is ok-ish,it's not cheap,I haven't said it's cheap only good in the price/performance department,if you want 3 displays I think u could use a SLi/Crossfire setup?
Thumbs up for ATi for giving this, and I agree that it's better to have something free than to pay for it,all I was saying is that this triple display thing is nothing new,it's been done for a long time with slower GPU's and you don't need a monster GPU to play some washed out game like Warcraft or other MMORPG the only problem in some cases is the inability of the game to run on triple displays, see widescreen gaming forum for that.

That product is now basically obsolete. It's only a matter of time before Nvidia do the same.

kind of, and i feel bad for matrox seeing that they're losing just another market. however, i don't think triplehead2go will be obsolete, as it's mostly gamers who won't need it anymore.

You don't even need a TH2GO to play in 3 screens; there's a software to enable it: SoftTH (SOFTware TripleHead). I've been using it for like 6 months or so now, and it works wonders, even on different size / aspect ratio monitors (I'm using 1 wide 20" and 2 "square" 17s). The only requirement is for the game to render in DX8 or DX9, it's not compatible with DX10 yet, but hey... It's free. You can download it on kegetys.net. Oh, you also need 3 video outputs, so 2 cards (or one of the GTX295 kind) are required.

Still, if this generation includes this feature natively and it works well, that could make me upgrade sooner than I thought... And even "changing sides"

As much as I like my 24", this would make 3 20-22" quite attractive for both the odd game and more so for A/V work as well as epic multitasking

I said it; you need a secondary card for the third output, or one of the dual GPU cards. (the secondary can be a cheap 8400GS, for example, the rendering work is always done in the primary card)

I guess we'll have to see what the corp whores do with initial pricing. I was impressed with Ati's aggressive pricing on the 48XX series and they did a hell of a job engineering a cost effective card with solid performance. Nvidia seems to think that consumers have an itch to bail them out and overpay for ineffective manufacturing designs. I'm curious to see what they do next because they can't be this pathetic. Mind you, most of my cards have been nvidia, but only because of timing and cheap step-ups.

Your fine, PCIe 1.0 16x is plenty, even with lower ram amounts (amounts you wouldn't want in the first place ). The 2.0 standard really was for enhanced 1-4x slot throughput and multi gpu setups. Gotta tell you I'm much more looking forward to this card as time passes by, really would love to build and uber Deneb system with my MSI board.
