Thumbs up Phenom 2 965 air testing

Well I got my cpu today and Im extremely happy with what Im seeing so far.

Previous cpu was 940BE running at 3.7ghz@1.53v.......3.8ghz was possible but during the cooler winter months.

Mobo is Asus M3A79T-Deluxe with newest bios.

    Memory is G-skill 2x2gb DDr2 1066.

This info is not for setting extreme records or speeds but just testing out the cpu speed alone nb is 2000 and so is HT, memory is runnign at rated 1066mhz.

Put the cpu into the mobo but didnt clear the cmos before doing so so it kept my currenty oc for the 940 which was 3.7ghz@1.53v nb 2600/ht 2600. so I cleared the cmos and checked the settings all clear checked the voltage on cpu it was set to 1.44v stock so I booted into windows , everything is fine.

Reboot to the bios and decide to set the voltage to 1.4 nd start ocing the multi.....I set it to 18.5 for 3.7ghz and get to windows without a hitch so far so good I load up wprime and run 1024 its goes through no problem then into
    3dm06 and it finishes both 3.7ghz 1.4v

I took the screenie at 99% for wprime just before it finished so yu could see it got to the end.

So my 940 would never get through any of these at 3.7ghz 1.4v.

So Im like ok lets do 3.8ghz 1.4v

    wprime

    32m super pi

So in essence this cpu is doing 3.8ghz@1.4v in the summer with 31c ambiant compared to my 940 that took 1.55v for 3.8ghz in the winter and had to drop to 3.7@1.53v.

    Ill continue doing tests

4ghz took 1.53v on the cpu it was unstable at first but .4v to the nb helped it stablize, I also upped the nb to 2800mhz. Heat was killing me today 31c in my house near the window with a fan blowing on the system, at 1.55v bios was showing 50c. Im putting in the ac tomorrow its sitting on the floor.

a shot right before it finished 62c

damn pic got cut off but you can see the score in there

Nice results, my 940 caps at 3.6 (stable, I can bench up to 3.85 but barely, and I partly blame the motherboard), so I'm getting excited about where these 965s are going. Gonna get one if prices drop soon.

    Thx for the resultats.

Compairing abit with my 2x 940BE(first one did about 3.7ghz 1.47v). The one i use now is doing 3.81ghz with 1.53v. So the 965 is about 200mhz improve meant for me....i think i wait for C3.

Don't think your cpu is stable too early. Even though it might withstand every bench you throw at it, it's most likely not gonna survive 15 minutes of Prime 95 blend. (reboot)

So far what you showed is nice but not better than my 955BE. I hope you can get the desired 4.1GHz out of it though.

    Keep pushing.

If it does what I need it to do without prime 95 its fine......tepms is a main reason prime will fail and its summer no need for me to prove to myself that its hot by making my cpu reboot with prime. Im sure if I make it cold enough I can force prime to finish an hour run.

3.8Ghz @ 1.4v There are some 9950 owners out there crying their eyes out right now.

That is a very nice gain for Phenom

also remember this is the older M3A79-T Deluxe (DDR2 version).......Im wondering what a newer mobo might be able to do with this cpu.....MSI 790FX GD70. This is a 6 month old OS install also

Yea im going to put the AC up today.......12,000 btu

I don't know if it's just heat mate.

I can run 3d mark 06 at 4.1GHz, cinebench in 64 bit at 4080MHz, 1M at even 4320MHz but i'm struggling to run Prime at 4GHz when the load temp never exceed 46ºC.

I know Prime is not the holy grail but i want to run as stable as possible for 24/7 usage.

Still looking forward what your cpu can do in lower ambient.

How high does the NB go?

I hear you but like my 940 was 2 hours prime stable during the winter 3.8ghz 1.55v 2800nb but wasnt prime stable at 3.7ghz 1.53v 2.6 in the summer.

All I do is game, overclock and surf the net its its been said a million times theres nothing certain people do that can possibly put 100% load on all 4 cores for 12 hours, 2 hours or even 15 minutes for that matter. Ive been overclocking since 01 and the only time Ive seen 100% usage on a cpu is when I use prime 95 or similar stress test on it. I like overclocking and messing around but I dont have unlimited funds and I dont want to kill something just for the hell of it, to me its just not worth it.

havent really messed with the nb, I just set it to 2.8 but Ill see what it can do

Its cool, Im gonna keep pushing Ill see if prime will run with 32c full load at 4ghz or better? thats 12 degrees cooler than what zues was trying to run it. 46c at a certain voltage (what voltage was he running?) might not work but lowering the temp at a similar voltage will increase success, this is a common fact.

    Temps is a big factor

    A little taste.... ac cooled
    12.9c idle

    32c full load @1.53v

cinebench and 3dm06 and superpi32m to come later tonight got some stuff to do today.

with the cooler temp Im able to now run benches at 4.1ghz 1.53v where yesterday 4ghz was as much as I could get benchable.......hopefully 4.2-4.3 is on the horizon for me

    Temps is a big factor

    A little taste.... ac cooled
    12.9c idle

    32c full load @1.53v

cinebench and 3dm06 and superpi32m to come later tonight got some stuff to do today.

with the cooler temp Im able to now run benches at 4.1ghz 1.53v where yesterday 4ghz was as much as I could get benchable.......hopefully 4.2-4.3 is on the horizon for me
Those temps are really good mate, what are you using to cool this chip??

Have you tried running LinX to test your o/c to see if it's stable?

I used to always build my systems using AMD processors, and had originally intended on using a PII 955 for my current build, but I fancied a change, and built an i7 system, and I am extremely happy with it tbh..

But I am still really temped to build another rig using a PII chip..

Can I ask, why do these processors require these high voltages for 4GHz?

Apparently AMD builds the cpu to function at these voltages. Intel builds theirs to function at lower voltages, 2 different architectures, 2 different ways of accomplishing similar tasks.

bios was showing 1.44v as stock but that might be wrong. Chew had his showing at 1.42 and 1.39v I believe

How high does the NB go?
well heres 1hour+ minutes of prime not much but its still running as I type this ......Ill let it go for 1-2 hours....maybe, I really dont like stressing for no reason pretty boring.

same as sig 1284 xigmatec but I installed my air conditioner today finally and the computer is right beside it. After hitting 62c yesterday I had to.

So the final tally for this cpu is

3.95ghz@1.475v with hot ambiant temps (32c and up)

4.1ghz@1.55v if I run the ac in the room (case is right next to the ac)

    and 4.3ghz suicide and superpi 1m, 1.6v

Im happy with the upgrade and it only cost me $95 as I sold my 940 for $150
