I pretty much have the same deal, I'm not used to using a DSLR myself, used to use 35mm a lot instead, so I'm just getting used to what I can do with this thing...I think you're a lot more advanced than I am, lol. Feedback is always nice.

By the way, I did really love that shot.

Anyway, photoshoot the night before, thought this turned out cool.

I got the light to shine directly there by turning my polarizing filter a little bit, worked pretty well I think. No editing in photoshop, not even "auto RAW" correction.

Lol not sure. I use AdobeRGB mode on my camera and so are all my colour spaces in LightRoom and PhotoShop.
The trick is to play around with the slider and trying to figure out how to make each image pop out.

Thanks ANP. I intentionally softened the image using a -40 on the Clarity slider to soften the image but the eyes still look nice and sharp!

Really nice pics Elisha. My guess is that A700 has simply perfect color reproduction, and quite good dynamic range. And you have skilled hands. I wonder, how nightshot from A700 looks like..

I have a few ISO 1600 portraits and thats about it. Haven't really ventured into night photography yet and I doubt anything short of a D700 or a D3 would look good beyond ISO 3200.

The a700 has the same sensor as the Nikon D300 and with firmware v4, it is almost on par with ISO performance. Probably 95% of the sensor performance of the D300. Nikon seems to have the upper hand on perfecting their firmware and Sony took over a year to bring out a near perfect firmware for the a700. Sony's filter implementation differs to Nikon as well. It's more noticeable when comparing the a900 and D3X.
The D90 has an improved sensor and is better at low light than the D300.
And I'm pretty sure the new D300s may get the newer improved 12MP sensor of the D90 or maybe a better one as well.

D90, D300 and D300s actually all have the same sensor. I believe the D300 and D300s may have more advanced EXPEED processors which is where the difference would come in. Especially between the D300 and A700. Though the D300 and A700 do not share the same sensor they are both created by Sony and they are very similar.

the model number on the D90 is not the same as the D300. It is clearly visible in performance as well.

Though it incorporates a 12-megapixel DX-format sensor, Nikon stresses that it's not the same sensor as in the D300. The pixels are the same size, however, and though it uses only 12-bit processing rather than 14-bit like the D300, Nikon claims high-ISO quality as good as the D300's, thanks to the same on-chip noise reduction.

Very similar but an updated version of what's on the D300.
Regardless the D300 is a different class of camera all by itself. The D90 only has video and a slightly different sensor on it.
