It is exceptionally fast on the synthetic tests. I don't think they use a well threaded test suite as do most reviewers. Something on that front needs to change before we can really see what these CPUs can do.

disappointing performance maybe software support is not up to it but the 2 extra cores didn't add that much..
Hope it overclocks better then the 45nm one by alot...

    Wow, very nice.

Power usage dropped, faster clock per clock and now supports 48gb of ram on x58.

It'd be great if they revealed the turbo-boost specs as well. Maybe they are similar to Lynnfield, which would be very good.

Woot! Roughly 8 fps increase on Crysis made me LOL, with the highest gain on the games tested?
Not something to write home, but its just surprising to me.

The games benchmarks were just right for my expectation.

No surprise really, Core i7 is already overkill for the majority of users with it's 8 threads. Must wait for software support ^^

At least power consumption and temperatures are a little bit better than I expected.

Oh boy I can't wait! 48gb of ram over 24gb we can use now can improve performance by.... oh nvm.

Orly? I saw also 27% bust in CineBench, 54% in MS Exel & 48% in Vantage CPU test. Clearly shows potential for well optimized multithreaded environment.

Yeah, but still its nice to know that you can double your RAM limit with just a simple CPU upgrade.

Still, when P965 came out in 2006, most people were running 1gb, and it supported 8 times that. Now 8gb seems within sight for many.

Now most people who run i7s have 6gb ram. The limit with Westmere will be also 8 times that. So 48gb won't seem too out of reach in 3-4 years.

For crunchers, this chip is a wet dream.

    For everyone else, meh.

Hmm i smell a new performance per watt king, same power need as bloomfield/gainestown at same clockspeed but 2 more cores? Yup everything set.

Also there needs to be new benchmarks with all that multicores coming... 50-34% utilization? pff

I honestly doubt that it'll be only extreme on the consumer side. Why?

Intel has never released a major tech update and reserved it only for EE cpus.

Who the hell will buy it? Even if the margins are huge, no average joe would even think about forking out $1000+ for a cpu. A few enthusiasts here and there, and that's about it.

It would also be pretty stupid if Westmere W3xx0 series come out since X58 owners can just drop them in.

    Probably well over $1000 USD.

Hopefully they will release some lower end counterparts, so they will be affordable.

^ or the 975 goes down in price to about $450 like the QX9650 is now, then just drop a TRUE spirit in there and you've got a good few GHz on the clock.

Pretty sure 32nm parts will overclock higher than any 45nm Nehalems.

The numbers this thing spits out are interesting. A single chip outdoes my Sandra MIPS/GFLOPS scores by a little but I nearly double its multimedia benchmark numbers.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

I smell the desktop market at best being ignored at worst being sucked in by dishonest marketing spruiking the great advantages Hex Core will bring to desktop users.

same power need as bloomfield/gainestown at same clockspeed but 2 more cores? Yup everything set.
    Such a terrible waste.

Also there needs to be new benchmarks with all that multicores coming... 50-34% utilization? pff
Even better than benchmarks would be applications that most people use that could benefit by the extra cores that come at the sacrifice of clockspeed.

Oh well, 3% of users should be happy.

    Interesting! Thx for sharing.

I really doubt they will release only EE, what would they do with the underbinned parts?
