    New LSI 9200 series controllers: 6Gb/s, 2.88 GB/s seq. reads, 1.87 GB/s seq. writes

The MegaRAID 9200 series controllers, featuring the LSISAS2108 6Gb/s SAS RAID-on-Chip (ROC), double the data transfer rates of their 3Gb/s predecessors to deliver industry-leading performance with up to 2.88 GB/s in sequential reads and 1.87 GB/s in sequential writes. The superior read/write performance makes them ideally suited for a broad range of application workloads, from data center applications such as email and database servers to more compute-intensive applications such as streaming video, OLTP and data archival.
    New LSI
    Pricing and availability(1)

    Internal ports:

    *
    MegaRAID SAS 9260-4i (4-port): $389
    *
    MegaRAID SAS 9260-8i (8-port): $599
    *
    MegaRAID SAS 9260DE-8i (8-port)(2): $729

    External ports:

    *
    MegaRAID SAS 9280-8e (8-port): $859
    *
    MegaRAID SAS 9280DE-8e (8-port)(2): $945
But it looks you will need a sata 6Gb/ drive to use it fully, no?
6Gb/s Signaling - Doubles the data transfer rate to and from HDDs. When 6Gb/s RAID controllers are coupled with 6Gb/s HDDs, unprecedented levels of performance can be achieved

    This would need PCI-e x16 then.. or PCI-e 2.0 x8.
    P5E64_Evo/QX9650, 4x X25-E SSD - gimme speed..

If you look at their site, they have at least 4 U.S. resellers...but they require you to register/log in.

That 4-Port card looks pretty tasty for the price. I see it comes with 512MB onboard memory. Is that more than enough for 4x SSD's (Intel 80GB G2's) attached to the card? Or is that considered a little skimpy? I've never owned a dedicated controller, so I will probably be jumping into a product like this head-first.

With innovative new 6Gb/s SAS product features and support for SATA, SAS and solid-state drives (SSDs)
You need 6Gb/s SAS drives, SATA is still 3Gb/s.

So if one would to hook up 8xSSDs in R0 each capable of doing 270MB/s but are still SATA 3.0Gb/s they would not reach the limit of this controller, but cap out at less?

Is the SAS 6Gb/s port really any different than SATA3? Both an SAS Drive & SATA can be connected to it. Is the card intuitive enough to be able to tell a difference what device is connected to it?

The card WILL work with 3 Gb/s SATA and SAS drives. Go to LSI's website and watch their video on the new controllers.

According to LSI you should be able to hock old 3.0Gb/s drives and have better performance:
“The idea here is the investment the reseller has made in the existing technology doesn’t go away,” says Suresh Panikar, senior manager, worldwide channel marketing at LSI. “If they have a need for higher performance they can add one of the 6Gb/s-based controllers. It is backward compatible.”

Yes, the card will work with 3Gb/s SATA and SAS drives, I meant that 6Gb/s functionality is available only on certain SAS drives but not on any SATA drives.

I've seen people on other forums getting it shipped so it should be in stock and available right now.

    Mwave had it in stock.
Nizzen, don't get this for a while, I want to hold the PCMARK vantage top score for more than 3 days this time.

So you really think this will outperform an Areca 1231ML for example?

Why not? If it is really capable of those sequential rates then it has a good deal more power, so it should also be capable of quite high IOPS. It is a next gen RAID card after all. We will probably see better stuff from Areca soon as well.

Just think that $300 for the MegaRAID SAS 920-i4 and outperform $800 cards is to good to be true.

But I'm all for that as I'm yet to update my setup.
