Well I did the upgrade today Q9550 + 4GB ram (suskill). Everything stock and no overclocking and this setup absolutely kills my old 2160 overclocked at 3 ghz, Running at only 2.8mhz tells me the extra cores really have an impact. I am stuck on bios 17 so no CO stepping although the chip supports it. I have had no luck with my floppy even since new so I may study the flashdrive bios upgrade to go v18 then overclock. Believe it or not I got to 17 with windows flash utility, I don't feel like risking it this time.

Just for kicks I tried 400 mhz fsb, no go, windows completely unstable. I also notice even when not overclocking xp thinks this processor is a xenon III processor. Sounds like I need the bios 18b.

I flashed to v18b, recognized as a Q9550, can only OC to 3.0 ghz but it is software related. Windows is fine till it starts loading all the startup junk like AVG and a hundred other junkies I don't need and have no idea to remove. I'lle stick with 3.0 ghz until one day I decide to gety a new OS and likely new MB. I'm very happy with the performance at 3.0 ghz.

    Here's my latest endeavor.

I've been examining the E0 Stepping predicament with IP35 PRO for about a year now.
Here's is a link to my current findings.
    TRP-IP35 PRO-E8600
Unfortunately the original thread regarding all of it is missing. One of my fellow staff members must have accidentally deleted it so my determinations from last summer and fall may not be available.
By the time all was said and done I had used a total of 16 different BIOS 18 files and performed 24 BIOS flashes using floppies as well as files throughout the process. I even pulled a couple of hot swaps.
I used 3 different IP35 PRO motherboards - one early and two late revisions, and a variety of actual BIOS chips.
You will see my findings in the linked thread.
I think that it has more to do with the actual BIOS chip. I purchased a brand new IP35 PRO - 1st revision with the original BIOS 10/11 chip. Well. 418 hours on it. That's new in my book. I flashed BIOS 18 to that chip and have it installed in my old, worn out, second edition IP35 PRO. Total success.
    So far.

Bottom line is that the IP35 PRO is a fantastic motherboard but the BIOS versions that support E0 Steppings are flaky at best. So if you want to achieve 100% successful results from an E8400, E8500, (E0 Stepping of course), and especially an E8600, then it would be best to go ahead and invest in a current motherboard that features a fully operational E0 Stepping BIOS.
Cuz it ain't gonna get no better!

In spite of its problems with the newer CPU versions, I still haven't used a better 775 motherboard than the ABIT IP35 PRO.

My E0 stepping Q9550 appears to be working fine at 3.4 Ghz. What issues should I be looking for?

I installed the trial win 7 and it works fine with this MB, has me thinking SSD. Can this MB use an SSD as the OS drive? Where can I learn about SSD conversion?

Any board with a Sata 2 controller can work with SSD drives they are just only SATA 2 nothing special is required.

Hi again, my Gigabyte P35-DS4 seems to got corrupted bios/died so I'm back to my Abit IP35 Pro. I was using +0.175v for MCH on the DS4 to get Performance level 7 ram timing stable, which should be 1.25 + 0.175 = 1.425v afaik.

Now what MCH voltage have you been running with your Abit IP35 Pro, you think 1.44v option would be safe to use? Just need this board to last until P55 + Lynnfield cpus arrive.

Is bios v17 bad or something? Can't even get 500x8 stable for my E8400 and voltages are already high and whatever I change one at a time doesn't seem to make any difference to the stability:

    vcore: 1.42~1.44
    VTT: tried 1.23 - 1.3v
    MCH: 1.44 - 1.48v
    vdimm: 2.2v

I remember running 500x8 on it before but with an older bios, still this board sux in overclocking compared to my Gigabyte P35 DS4 which ran rock solid at 500x8 (as long as it didn't kill my micron D9 sticks) at:

    vcore: 1.36v
    vtt: 1.2v
    MCH: 1.425v
    vdimm: 2.15v

Can't socket 1156 arrive a little faster, getting tired of this piece of and don't really feel like buying another mobo just for some 1 - 1½ month usage. I think I used BIOS v14 b4 so gonna give it a try b4 I'll have to settle with a lower overclock. It ran fine with this bios with 9x multi at 4GHz but performance sux then.

EDIT: Upgraded to the modded (by rebelhaven) v18 beta and have had more luck, either that or going to 1.48v for MCH really helped but I tried that earlier too and then it didn't help (well perhaps I didn't have enough vcore). But then when playing UT3 for a while I suddenly got a BSOD in nvdisp.dll file and was like wtf can motherboard also impact on gfx card clock stability? But then I searched around and found this interesting issue http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=4432 - Installed and have ran fine so far, seems this Abit IP35 Pro board could be affected by this issue, I know Gigabyte P35 DS4 certainly have had to have the issue fixed within their BIOS as I never got a BSOD in nvdisp.dll with that.

Using the same v18 beta from rebelhaven this is the best mine old C0 8400 under SS can do.It can run 24/7 rock solid at 500MHz give more vtt to cpu...

    Nonsense.
You can use a lot more MCH Voltage than that. Most I have ever had to use is 1.48V but we had guys over at ABIT Forums using over 1.5+V with some of the really radical IP35 PRO Overclocks.
If you're having PWM temp issues pull the heatsinks off, lap 'em and do that bolt mod thing ACE-A-RUE (IIRC) has linked or for that matter, I have used mini-washers beneath the spring pins themselves. It all depends on how much bowage may be in the assembly.
A 40mm fan screws right onto that NB heatsink. It's a big one anyway. And if it's flat and flush, you shouldn't have any problems with adding a tad more MCH Voltage.

I was under the impression 45nm didn't like high VTT on P35? I mean stock is 1.1v for this board and it doesn't go up more than to like 1.5v or so. Anyway it's the Abit IP35 Pro that's the real prob, it's known to not hit very high FSB compared to other boards, Gigabyte P35 DS4 ran 500 fsb fine at 1.2v VTT and could have run at like 1.35v MCH but to run performance level 7 stable at 500MHz it wanted a bit more juice.

This Abit board has like nearly 0.04vdroop as well... DS4 had like 0.02v max under full load.

Temps aren't an issue, I run openbench and NB have plenty airflow around it. I would so like to ditch this board but then my next upgrade is so coming so close.
