    I did indeed.

The L845 was the crappest of all and needed over 1.35V to do 4GHz

The L846 needs 1.325 to do 4GHz and the L847C needs 1.30V to do 4GHz

May not sound bad, but that is coming from an L828B that needed only 1.25V to do 4GHz.

My L828B does 4.35GHz at 1.40V actual and none of these chips could do anywhere near that. They all needed over 1.45V actual do get anything like those speeds.

I guess you are as lucky as me. I get used to do a RMA before I get for what I payed for.

Seems to be a common trend with Intel CPUs, they start out with average overclockability, then they reach a "golden" period, then they start to decline like mad. Normally I'd take this to be a sign of increasing binning but since the Q9650 is pretty much right at the top, I wonder if they're starting to use cheaper materials for manufacturing?
There are some new batches that still overclock very well with low voltage but I think that they are only available for Intel and friends.

If you watch this thread you will hardly beleave how high the guys oced their Q9650 with a low vcore:

At this moment there isn't much to share. The Q9650 is going back to Intel because it really sucks. Core# 3 has a stuck sensor and is failing all the time in Prime95.

This is very bad because in the past I had to RMA my Q9450 after a few months because it couldn't run at stock speed anymore without failing Prime95.

I hope to have a good one at the end of the week.

Good luck with that buddy, I'll be rooting for you

In my experience with another L847C, I have tried 2 x L847C187 and one had a VID of 1.2625 and one of 1.3000 and both equally disappointing.

The L847C which seems impressive is the L847C037 from what I have read.

The high VID CPU's need a lot of voltage to run LinX stable at 4GHz+.

    Is this bad?

I think that with good cooling it shouldn't be a problem. The chips seems to be running at that speed without much effort.

To be honest. I think that, with my ASUS Rampage Formula, G.SKILL F2-9600CL5D-4GBPI memory and Windows XP 64 Bit, it's impossible to have a Q9650 running at 4GHz+ with low CPU Voltage.

At 4GHz+ and the memory at 1200MHz+ with low tRD, I'm pushing so much GFlops out of this CPU that it's impossible to have it running with low CPU Voltage if I want it LinX stable.

    That's what I think.

Of course a lower VID Q9650 should probably have it running stable with a little less CPU Voltage but I don't see it running LinX stable at 4GHz under 1.20V.

But I still would like to have a low VID Q9650 and I'm hoping that I've got it all wrong.

Could you maybe upload your settings what you used with your Q9550 and the bios version?
I tryed to get 4GHz this evening with high voltages but without any succes
I really dont get it im running 3.7 with really low voltages on my MB but 3.9 or 4.0 are just impossible.

Now as im thinking of it, my 5V and 3.3V Voltages from my PSU are very low.
I noticed this when i bought the damn thing but i thought it where faulty readings but now after a reinstall and a newer version of everest im really suspecting my PSU.
Can i be right with this?

PS you can also see the voltages what im running on my MB are pretty low as i say so myself.
Tomorrow ill post some bios settings

I was just going to ask that question.

What is the maximum temperature the NorthBridge can handle on the Rampage Formula comfortably without crashing?

I have my case on the balcony, and my NB is max 45degrees load, whatever volts up to 1.69v. I have 1 120mm fan on the side (blowing to the back of the case) standing up in front of ram and NB sink around 1000rpm. Outside temp is +-15degrees here in Amsterdam. I didnt place the minicooler that comes with mobo btw. (I have maximus formula, same heatsink I guess)

PS;working on my crappy Q9550 E0 now, cant get past 455FSB so far. @455FSB i can set perfomancelvl on 7 stable, but 455FSB needs it on 10...

EDIT:Many say the norhtbridge can take 55degrees load stressed. Any above will get less stable at high clocks. I believe pretty much that is the case.

Use an Antec Spot Cooler to cool your NB. You should see a temperature drop around 8° Celsius.

It's the easiest way to cool the NB with air.

    Thanks for the reply A-Grey.

I put an Antec Spot Cool fan blowing onto my NorthBridge when I first built my Rampage Formula about a year ago. I now need to come up with a solution for the new heat problem which started a few days ago.

See this thread for the details of what happened. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=230907

The Spot Cool is a great device. It had solved the problem until now. I'm puzzled what to do next.

    @traveler

That 4870X2 brings out a lot of heat and passed through the NB heatsink on the way up and also the NB craves a bit more juice to run the 4870X2 and yes both those things add so the NB runs hotter.

WC is probably the best option to cool the NB but if you plan on stay with air you can take of the heatsink/pipe arrangement that cover the NB and SB and keep the heatsink that cover the VRM, yes the heatsink/pipe is a two part arrangement, one for the NB,SB and one for the VRM.

And then try something like this with a fan for the NB

and something like this for the SB

I put an Antec Spot Cool fan blowing onto my NorthBridge when I first built my Rampage Formula about a year ago. I now need to come up with a solution for the new heat problem which started a few days ago.

See this thread for the details of what happened. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=230907

The Spot Cool is a great device. It had solved the problem until now. I'm puzzled what to do next.

You could try with a Thermalright Chipset Cooler and a 80 mm Fan that blows the hot air from your graphics card away.

You could also use one of these coolers for your SB, like I do. Or use a cooler, suggested by Ghostleader, for the SB so you still can use the PCI slots if you need them.

I've found this post on the ASUS Forum with all the latest drivers and utilities for the ASUS motherboards.

Here's the link to the post: http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?...Language=en-us

Everything seems to work great. I'm using the latest Chipset drivers, Network drivers and Sound card drivers. I also use the latest version of ASUS PC Probe II.

    OCZ Blade PC-9600 8Gb

Finally I got my Blades, two sets of 2x2 PC-9600

Early 4x2 run with my Rampage Formula / E8600, seems like I need more then 1,80 to run them in 4x2 but itīs still early days, they do run 2x2 @ 1,80 just fine though.
