A day late and a dollar short but almost there.

Finally got a chance today to finish up my first AMD build in a very long time..
    Specs;
    case: Antec mid tower
    AMD 940 cpu
    Gigabyte MA790GP-DS4H
    2x2 gig GSKill DDR2-1066
    EVGA 9600 GSO 384mb vid
TRUE Black w/120x38mm UltraKaze 87cfm fan
    PCP+C 610W PSU
    74 gig raptor
Still doing software updates and feeling my way around so more later but first impressions are it's fast and responsive.

Right here I'd like to say thanks to Simon for the cpu and to chew* for the motherboard..
    Thanks guys, greatly appreciated.

nice dave, hope it all goes well, although i am surprised with the 9600GSO, thought you might have stuck an ATI solution in there, just for the AMD build thing.

    look forward to some pics

That crossed my mind also but the only ATI cards I have here are the X550's that I use in the crunchers.
I had a HD2900XL 1 gig card but just gave it to a guy that needed a card..
I do have a HD2600XL in my 'daily driver" and could have grabbed that but honestly, it didn't cross my mind.

Neither should it. That 9600GSO has its own little story to tell ( ), and it runs just fine as a daily user/cruncher.

Just spent the last hour trying to educate myself on this machine.
been lots of years since I played with an AMD and this is just an hour so bear with me..
My first thoughts on it is that it's fast, it's smoothe and it's fun.
It's far from optimised but you can see that this is a machine that you'd enjoy using daily.
temps are nice and thats the TRUE and the monster 87cfm fan doing the job they're designed for but not that loud.
Even with the side panel off and a foot from my head I had to lean in to hear the fan.
I'll post more here as I get some time on it but as said, a nice fun machine to work with.

Dave... photoshop isn't just for professionals anymore

Glad to see you playing around with Phenom II, it is a fun chip to experiment with. Now start talking to Simon about a dual-socket Istanbul setup

yea, so I didn't resise the pics..they were only 800K each..
When money gets better I may well do that after seeing how nicely this works.
Honestly, set it at 3500-3600 for everyday usage and it's a killer machine..
With the raptor it's all of maybe 12 seconds tops to windows desktop..
No BS, I like this very much.

idle is a bit high. maybe set up another fan so it's push pull config. or it's not mounted quite proper? anyways, nice clocks.

The one thing I don't like is that you have to mount the TRUE horizontal instead of vertical and in a mid tower the psu is 3" above the HS..
BUT it's doing the job and the little beatsie has been on WCG at 100% load for the last 15 hours..
    max temp is 48C

Raiderman, most 940s do 3.6Ghz at stock or under 1.4v. Instead of the extra 100Mhz, dial it down to 3.6Ghz.

wow from 41c idle? that's actually pretty damned good. u know as far as " dissapating the heat " goes, under load

That's why i swear by the TRUE's and the UltraKaze fan combo.
I have the same combo on a X3380 yorkie thats at 4171 at 100% load in a closed case and is my daily driver.

What i see is that there is a certain level of heat thats developed at idle but the HS/fan combo is so efficient that it doesn't let it "build up" and minimises the max temp..
That has always been my focus in any build, get the heat out of there as fast as possible.
Heat will build on itself if you let it.

I was saying to perkam earlier in Pm that what really impresses me on this is the "perceived" speed of the system. It's not benchmarks, it's not numbers but in daily type usage it is just plain fast.
Part of that is the raptor but it's only a part.
I turned it down to 3407 last night to let it crunch the night as I wanted to get a good feel for the system before I pushed higher.
At 3407mhz the computational power seems to be a little more than a Intel Q6600 at 3600mhz but it is much smoother in usage.
It's sitting on my desk in my office with 3 other machines beside it all at 100% load.. 2 dual socket harpers and a sossaman rig. I turn off the AC when I go to bed and came down here this morning to find 80F temps ..
The AMD had moved exactly 1C while the Intel's had moved up 5C..
Like I said, very nice machine for daily usage.

With those temps, you should be able to do 4Ghz once Winter comes in, though the same applies to all your other rigs as well

I'd bet money that with a little time to learn the chips I can hit 4GHz on it..
