what kind of wood did they use on this? seems like ply? if it was MDF, then your surfaces would be nicer and cleaner...
ever consider replacing the wood panels with plexi? seems your aluminum structure is sound enough...

if sticking with wood, get yourself an electric sander... go with heavier grit and get those surfaces flat BEFORE you clean,prime,sand... that process is for when you are ready for final coat...
