Intel's 34nm NAND SSDs launch in two weeks

    http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...s-launch-weeks
    http://www.electronista.com/articles...4nm.ssds.soon/

RUMOURS ARE growing louder that Intel will be launching new SSDs based on the firm's 34nm NAND chips within just a couple of weeks. Previous reports had said Chipzilla planned to come out with its new 34nm flash memory drives in Q4, but that timetable has been nudged up.

Solid State Drives (SSDs) have been around for a while, but their high costs, limited capacities and sometimes questionable reliability have ensured the drives have remained somewhat niche. But this is all about to change, apparently.

We've been told that with these new 34nm NAND SSDs, users can expect higher performance, higher capacities, and most importantly, lower prices.

Amongst the 34nm offerings hot off the production line will be a 320GB drive, plus 160GB and 80GB capacities too. But there very well could be more. Our sources tell us there will be drives big enough to replace the HDDs in most, if not all laptops.

Intel is said to be really optimistic about SSD prospects in 2010, especially considering the smaller and cheaper process node along with SSD specific optimizations built into Windows 7.

So brace yourselves for these new drives coming out in about two weeks, and watch as prices fall to lower levels. µ

And I checked the news posts first

You should always expect a price premium at first, especially for the top product in the category. In a few months, then price will start to settle.

Fab is in progress & samples have already been sent out to customers and that comes direct from Intel's web site.....maybe reviewers even have samples. I think you're right though a couple of weeks seems a bit tight for these to hit the shelves, especially UK shelves.

The Intel SSD's have 16mb cache, and does it's job very well. What stone have you been hiding under, mate...

My guess is they will release the new 80GB model with new specs at a price point of current 80GB.
Something similar like they do with their cpus.

You're working awfully hard to stir the pot. New products always see price hikes from retailers, but Intel drives have never been a "pos."

Not likely by a long shot, first because M is MLC, E is SLC, plus they'd never allow the M series to outpower the previous E series
    Though - I WISH
I believe we will only see higher seq. write speeds and some better random I/O, unless it's SATA3.

Really the only benefit I see for this at the moment is the potential to bring prices down across the board. If the performance difference between these new disks and the old ones is proportionate to the difference between the Vertex and the current Intel lineup I'm not sure we will see a huge difference in noticeable performance. If the controller is improved there might be some real benefit as far a compatibility issues, etc. are concerned.

Dodged a missile. Almost bought the Gskill falcon, but since they mentioned "lower pricing". Hmm.

All systems sold. Will be back after Sandy Bridge!

    LOL.
I'd agree with "best consumer SSD at the launch" or "best consumer flash SSD", but you're (both) greatly exaggerating.
