Riska, thanks for the reponse. i've tried the past 3 driver versions (9.4,9.5,9.6). mine's a ddr4 version, could that be the culprit?
one way to confirm that ATI powerplay works is to see if the gpu clock goes down @ idle right?

E8500 @ 4.208 w/ corsair h50 , DFI LP UT P35 T2R, inno3d gtx 470 hawk, 2x2gb patriot viper sli (matches the color of dfi ut), corsair hx620, antec p180
