LMAO. Seriously though guys it's part of what I do. My job is security, and keeping a low profile is imperative in my line of work (not for me, but for others....I'm not that valuable). Anyway, so I'm always looking for people "slipping", so I was helping Charles out before he got too ahead of himself and let the world know what he looks like. That would be catastrophic around the globe.....

I just wanna say ... hiiyah777 - you crack me up. Absolutely hilarious stuff. I, for one, am not really sure Charles' exists. We know for a fact he doesn't leave fingerprints - doesn't that make you suspicious? Maybe we can convince him to post the real Charles once he finishes this build for Daniel (you are getting a masterpiece, my friend).

Oh, he definitely exists alright. I once saw Charles scissor kick Angela Landsbury!

He once punched a hole in a cow just to see who was coming up the road.

Charles grew a third arm and keeps it in a vault.

Did I ever tell you about the time Charles took me out to go get a drink with him? We go off looking for a bar and we can't find one. Finally Charles takes me to a vacant lot and says, 'Here we are.' We sat there for a year and a half and sure enough someone constructs a bar around us. The day they opened we ordered a shot, drank it, and then burned the place to the ground. Charles yelled over the roar of the flames, 'Always leave things the way you found em!'

He's a ten foot tall beastman who showers in vodka and feeds his baby shrimp scampi.

He sleeps eight hours a night! ........ well, he's pretty normal when it comes to that.



Okay I'll stop and say something on-topic. Seriously Daniel, I'm jealous. You're getting the most incredible piece of functional artwork I've ever seen. Charles has outdone himself on this piece, and that's saying alot since he's already outdone everyone else with his others.

Congratulations my friend, I can't wait for you to get this in your hands (as I'm sure you can't) and tell us all how beastly this rig runs!!

Well, tbh, I don't upgrade that often. So spread over 5-6 years it's probably less that what most folk here on XS are spending on yearly upgrades.

My current home work/game station is over 7 years old . Dual socket AMD MPs, used to have 1 gig of RAM, an Nvidia 5xxxFX for a graphics card, this thing was a beast back in the day! But the poor thing has been through a lot:

- mb capacitors leaked four years ago and they were replaced by Asus (just the caps, not the board!)
- one 512Mb dimm died about three years ago and I've been running on only one 512Mb dimm since then . Probably not a big deal to find a working matching dimm, but I was too lazy for that .
- please note, none of the two 120Gb WD Caviars inside had any troubles during these 7 years of usage!

Project Update: Made good progress yesterday - need to make a few minor tweaks to the loops which I'll work on today. I prepared a little pictorial that I'll leave you with while I work on thems loops. Jason - you behave yourself - I'm leaving Shazza in charge...


Life at murderbox isn’t all red carpet gala dinners or Celebrity Pro-Am Charity golf events, in fact – it’s none of that stuff. It’s more about late-night trips to Home Depot; trying to find something that can be pounded or dremeled into something else. I think I know the location of every single item at Home Depot… not to mention those in a few other stores.

Anyway, in today’s installment of Project: Daniel’s murderbox, I’ll demonstrate a small yet important step in building a murderbox. Once again - it’s all about the little details!

Today I’ll prepare an optical drive.

We were very pleased to discover that Pioneer uses the same chassis for their top of the line, blu-ray burner as they do for the CD/DVD DVR-216 model – which is what fits the murderbox|murderMod faceplate. Availability was an issue here in Canada so Kirk graciously sent me one – thanks Kirk!









As you can see, the issue is all this beige plastic. The outer metal pieces can be powder coated but what to do with the portion of interior frame that’s visible from the back? The answer is to cover it with vinyl.






For this type of work, I choose matte finish over gloss– especially when covering surfaces that aren’t perfectly smooth or have imperfections.






Once the piece is cut and carefully placed on the surface, I push out any air bubbles. It’s best to do this before wrapping the vinyl around the edges.






Next, I’ll wrap the vinyl around the edges and use a smooth plastic tool to make sure it’s properly stuck to the sides. Consider where the external casing will go and make sure the vinyl will be well behind it and not just at the edge.










Once that’s finished, it’s time to carefully cut away the excess vinyl. Sorry, no action shots here... needed both hands!






It’s great when you have powder coated pieces ready to go – in this case I’ll use parts from another drive to save time.






Make sure you stick this thing back inside. I have no idea what it does but it’s probably needed. I mean why else would it be there?






Now I’ll screw it all back together. Unfortunately, the drive comes with yucky silver screws but guess what… guess which black screws also fit? That’s right – the screws that come with a Hammond box! I mean – what can’t the Hammond box do?










Now that it’s all back together, let’s have a look…





There’s still some plastic visible up inside there but that won’t be seen when the drive is installed. The important thing was to cover the back which has now been done.

… and that back edge…





Very nice…





The drive is now ready for duty!

I am consistently amazed by your attention to detail, and the endless tricks up your sleeves to match...just fantastic. I'm torn between this and dreamaxx's method of using a faceplate. Charles' method is unassuming and could pass off as a very high-end stock part. Reasonably so...then it doesn't draw attention away from the rest of the build. Without this update I probably wouldn't even notice it in the end product.

Dreamaxx's method has the skilled custom look that makes you go whoa...that's great craftsmanship.

Both are sex and sadly beyond my level of skill

That's great Charles! I kinda fun too dealing with those vinyl ... esp. the carbon fiber. Nice job as always!
