Thanks for the feedback. I'm trying to be a cheap skate to save buying a new laptop for my daughter. She has a dell latitude D505, with 512 ram and a 1.6 cpu. Boot up/ app loading takes forever. I’ve got 2gb of ram I can stick in it and would not mind spending around £120 for an ssd, but hadn’t counted on the hdd being an ide connection.

The MTron & Photofast look like good options, but are a bit over budget. Anyone know anything about the Transcend drives below? I know they are a bit crap, but good enough for use on a laptop that is only really used as a typewriter and for web surfing?

    Transcend TS16GSSD25-S 16GB 2.5" Int SSD - SLC (IDE) = £100.21
    Transcend TS32GSSD25-M - 32GB 2.5" Int SSD - MLC (IDE) = £77.67

Maybe I would be better getting a faster hdd if there is such a thing?

Edit: the laptop forum rates the HM160JC - 160 Gb Samsung as one of the fastest 2.5" ide drives and its under £40.....its not like I'm going to be the one sitting around waiting for 12ms, so the samsung it is. Apart from latency the drive performance does not look too bad, so no need to feel too guilty and its a definate plus to what's in there now.
