Intel delays debut of Core i5 platform until early September

Intel has decided to postpone the debut of its new mainstream desktop PC platform, Lynnfield processors (tentatively Core i5) and 5-series chipsets, from July as originally scheduled, to early September 2009, according to sources at motherboard makers.

However, Core i5 processors will be available early for retail sale in late August, while P55-based motherboards will appear even sooner in mid-August, the sources noted.

Due to the global economic downturn driving down market demand, Intel expects the launch will allow more time for 4-series inventory to deplete.

Intel plans to launch three Core i5 CPUs with frequencies of 2.93GHz, 2.8GHz and 2.66GHz and priced at US$562, US$284 and US$196 in thousand-unit tray quantities. All of them will feature a TDP of 95W. The P55 chipset will be priced at US$40.

The entry-level Havendale processor is scheduled to launch in January next year, while P57, H57 and H55 chipsets will launch in the first quarter next year.

    P57
    What. The. ****.

Seriously. As if P55 isn't expensive enough.

P57 is just asking for its pants to be pulled by eventual cheaper X58 boards, like the new one from MSI.

hmmm wait, i dont get it... the launch is delayed to september, but boards and cpus will actually be available even earlier?
    that doesnt make any sense?

and again confirmation that p55 is way overpriced and costs as much as p45+ich10 combined, and x58 only costs 10$ more than P55, and thats without the rumored price cut of x58... so soon x58 will cost about the same as P55?

or do you still claim me and others are just making that up?

So basically that's $10 less for PCB layer shaving (I'm being very generous right, saaya?), $60 less on the CPU, and $10 less on the chipset.

CONGRATULATIONS, a $80 discount after ONE year!

P57 is the replacement for P55 in january. Like ICH9 vs ICH10. nothing spectacular.

There will also be Q57 and H57.

The date should be september 9th with 5 models. And january 10th for Clarkdale also with 5 models.

All i can think of is maybe a soft launch. They supposedly get out into stores, but they don't move too many of them at first...then there's the debut and everybody buys?

There is rumoured to be a price cut on X58? The P55 pricing confuses me also.

I have no issue with dual sockets (amd pulled it off with mild success with S754 and S939) but i5 and P55 pricing confuses me greatly, it almost seems like Intel WANTS i5 to be a flop?

Core 2 Duo(Conroe) was based on the Intel Core Duo(Yonah) which was based on the Pentium M(Banias) which was based on the Pentium III(Coppermine).

Core 2 Duo is a Pentium III on meth.

Its on all chipsets now I think. Its the interface that Clarkdale uses to get the display (IGP) out. So CPU->Chipset->DVI/DisplayPort/HDMI etc.

too bad there isn't any competition from AMD. anyone else think p55 is a lost cause at that pricepoint ? (60$ less than i7)

I think that the Nehalem architecture as a whole is a failure on the desktop except for the Turbo mode, and the i5 platform sucks even more than i7's. It's indeed too bad AMD isn't there with the PhII because this is such a great time to forget about Intel if you are bored with your s775 system... c'mon Intel bring the next uarch already.

    QFT!

This is a bad joke. I've complained about this how long ago? So they say the processor is more expensive because most of the Northbridge's functions are on the Processor. So with fewer of these features on the board, WHY TF are they still more expensive than other chipset boards with more features?

Look at its feature list? If folks were getting something for these high prices, so be it! Nothing is going to change at Intel until AMD gets its act together. I know some folks on this forum think it already is, but Intel's actions says otherwise.

Intel's delay is the same thing AMD did with X2, while holding back Dual Cores slower and cheaper than the 3800+ processors. Unlike others (or at least one other), I think it sucks while Intel is doing it as well. Notice AMD's market share increased (just like P4 did in Q1 and Q2 of 06) while Intel is doing this I hope AMD launches something better that either catches or passes Intel.

Irrelevant! Nice for Xtreme systems, not much use for AMD. AMD needs something with better IPC while running at 2.66GHz. P4 overclocked higher than 7GHz

By the time i5 gets to stores we'll probably see one more Phenom II speed bump(3.4Ghz?) and with that clock speed it will roughly be on par with the 2.93Ghz lynnfield. Pricing will play a major role in the phenom II vs i5 market battle as well as quality and availability(in i5's case) of the boards
