BlackOPS S3 reboot

Hi all,

Well, this is my first post to the forum.
Recently I have built a new PC with BlackOPS board, consisting of
Q9400 CPU, G.skill PC3-12800 8GB memory, GTS250 1GB VGA,
Seagate 500GB x 2 RAID for OS and data, Seagate 1.5TB for data,
Sunbeamtech Core-Contact Freezer for CPU cooler(man, it's not compatible),
BIOS P06, and Vista 64 ultimate...

The PC works great.. and overclocks pretty good upto 3.2GHz by
changing only FSB. But one serious problem with overclocking is that
whenever it goes into S3 sleep, it won't wake up properly, and keeps rebooting.

A funny thing is, it's nothing to do with OC frequency. Just changing
"Over Clock Phase Select" to "Manual OC" or "Instant OC" in BIOS is enough
for the constant reboot after S3 wake-up.

Does anybody have any idea how to cure the problem?

Hmm.. Looks like I'm the only one who suffers from the S3 resume error.
As a matter of fact, I didn't know the existence of such a problem
until myself got a first-hand experience of it.

The S3 resume error related to the ACPI(Advanced Configuration and Power Interface)
appears to be quite common and notorious anomalies. Many suffer, but no one seems
to have a definite solution for it. They blame OS, BIOS, various H/W and drivers, S/W,
or individual's bad luck..

So, what do I do now??

Well.. but sleep mode looks like too sweet to avoid.
It takes less than 10 sec or so to resume from which you stopped
your work.

Can you please specify how is it not compatible?

I was planning to get this, but what you say got me worried, I saw the Sunbeamtech Core Contact Freezer in the compatibility list for the blackops.

Sorry for late reply. These days I'm not visiting this forum frequently.

Anyway, the Sunbeamtech Core Contact Freezer is not fully compatible with BlackOPS. The stock north bridge cooler interferes with the CPU cooler. If you really want to install the Sunbeamtech CPU cooler, you have to replace the 20T stock north bridge cooling fan with a 10T fan. Further, you got to trim, say 1~2 mm off one corner of the 10T fan because even the 10T fan still interferes with one of retention clips of the CPU cooler.

After the trimming of the 10T fan, you are ready to install the cooler. However, I would say that the installation is not that easy. You would need quite of patience, a little bit of clever thinking, and a couple of trial and error.

After all the troubles, you will finally have a very decent CPU cooler. In my case, when I torture my Q9400 CPU (overclocked to 3.2 GHz) with IntelBurnTest, the temperature never crept over 58C degree with ambient about 24C degree.

Gentlemen, that's not the end of the story, however. You didn't pay full price yet. With 10T north bridge cooling fan, you have much a lower wind speed. Consequence? Right, much a higher north bridge temperature!

I would not recommend the Sunbeamtech cooler. Go find other decent CPU cooler (sorry I don't know which one is good) that doesn't interfere with the stock 20T north bridge fan. Otherwise you would end up with over 60C degree north bridge in summer, like me.

have you contacted foxconn tech support about this problem?
could it be caused by any of your add in devices?
there are usb and pci and pciE cards that can cause problems with S3 resume...
even some PSUs can cause trouble if the 5v standby voltage has a problem for example...
are you using an usb or ps2 keyboard?

what exactly happens when you go to s3 and what happens when you try to resume?

I haven't contacted foxconn support yet. Perhaps I lost interest in overclocking due to the problem of rising temperature of north bridge or just due to hot summer weather.

Anyway I'm using a usb mouse and a HDTV pci-e card. Any of these devices could cause the reboot problem. And I didn't do any experiment of changing the usb mouse to a ps2 mouse or removing the TV card. So I don't know whether these are the cause of the trouble or not.

But one really mysterious thing to me is, why just changing "Over Clock Phase Select" tab to "Manual OC" and doing nothing other than that makes my PC reboot (after S3 sleep)!! Probably just touching the Over Clock Phase Select tab makes the BIOS change some internal parameters to other values and these changed values screw up S3 mechanism? I don't know...

i also have this problem. and it seems to be related to the memory clock because i havent modified the fsb. here are my specs: e8400, foxconn blackops, patriot viper 2x1GB (2000 mhz), antec truepower trio 650w, 9600gt (512 mb), emu 0404 pci card. thats pretty much it, the keyboard and mouse are both usb.
also, ive used a different kit (reaper hpc 2x2GB 1800mhz) with the same result.
