Now this will be my number 1 cruncher had to do it really for the price...I agree that Dell's might not be the greatest place to start, but the current cost of the CPU + memory is equivalent to what I paid for the lot

It's ok really. As long as you toss the mobo, ram, and cooling, you're good.
Seriously tho, who else besides Dell could sell an i7 setup with 4GB of DDR3-1066 (I didn't even know such slow DDR3 existed )
