The flatness of the heat sink certainly makes a difference, I know cause I've had good results lapping various HS. I've never lapped a CPU cause the warranty goes right out the window. Then again, perhaps I'll look into it since in a way, my CPU is irreplaceable anyway. If you want, you can PM me about particular technique for lapping a CPU.

BTW, you got me wondering about running in slow mode vs full speed QPI.
Turns out, it's a function of motherboard. I've tried eight different mobos, and only the two giga byte boards make a difference. That is,
I've validated 222x21 in SM with the giga UD5 but with full speed, I could do only
220x21. With the biostar x58, asus, DFI, and MSI boards, I can get 220-222x21 (depending on board) at full speed. In fact, I just set my personal record with the biostar x58 with full speed QPI.

Your temps seem to be much better than mine. Take watercooling and you're on the run to get 60°C
I had pressure modded the CM V8 and cut back on the AS 5, feeling that I had to much the previous time. Wasn't impressed with the new temps, so threw a stock TRUE on, temps dropped 5c (probably the paste), with the same fan. Curious at that point, I lapped the HS, and the cpu at work last night, pressure modded the TRUE, and dropped another 10c so far. I'm not sure if the temps will drop more as this is on fresh AS 5. Inlet air temp is 25c, the fan is a Scythe 110 cfm cheapie, just going to pick up another bracket to run 2 and see what I get. After work tonight, I'll open the patio door to drop another 10-15c, to see what water would offer me.

After having pelts, WC, and phase in the past I kinda wanted to keep this simple with air, but this chip is making it tempting ! $300 (cdn) for a triple rad, GTZ combo, or $600 (cdn) for a Boreas. I'm not sure I want to prep and deal with condesation again though

On the CM I just added 4 washers behind the nuts to pull it tighter, on the TRUE it is a single large washer under the "X" intersection.

I just turned on HT at my preios settings, and went away for a few minutes, normaly it forces the system to reboot if it's not tweaked, this time was the first time I seen prime only shut down, system is still up. What area should I look at ?

No need to lap the GTZ though, they are as flat as can be. During the various lapping stages that I did with this 920, the evidence of a severely warped IHS as I wore away the high spots was pretty clear. It took a good hour, going from 400g - 600g - 1000g - 1500g to get it down to where I deemed it as perfectly flat. Highly recommended if you don't give a rats ass about warranty

EX58-Extreme is not a board for i7 920, you need to get Flaming Blade/Bloodrage/DFI UT/DK in order to get higher bclk values.

    They are nice but LOCKED!

In my Rampage II Extreme the Xeon W3520 has 3 locks that i7 920 doesn't have:

    - DRAM locked to 2 multipliers: 1:3 and 1:4
    - Uncore clock locked
    - QPI link transfer rate locked

I am asking Intel through my supplier if they are really locked or this is due only by an immature BIOS.

    Take care of it.

Thanks for your pic, up to 4305 I just adjusted vcor and vdimm, I never had to mess with my other voltages on the C0 series due to limited bus speeds. Anyway I turned off HT due to the air cooling for testing, and ran an hr of prime small fft's, with the only difference being vcor 1.312 and vdimm 1.66 under load (compared to yours ), cores ranged from 66c-72c in a 19c ambient. Once I find the limits of the chip and mobo I'll back pedal the voltages if I can. Maybe we can get this batch # a little higher on the Giga !

    -Uncore 13 x, 16x, 17x tested, all available
-QPI same options as before only 36x (18x) tested

Great clocks, Frag! Passing prime at 44xx is a tall order under any circumstances. To do so at only 1.29 Vcore is
sensational. Hope to see more good numbers in the future......nice job!

Thanks Roller11, I'll try in the next couple of days what it takes to get HT working at that speed, but this time I'll use the chill from mother nature. I'm no longer confident in my ram though, we'll see....
