I understand that not every board or CPU can do what others do, but I guess there should be more people getting those results. Since this is well in Intel's spec'd values Im slightly confused why no one is seriously going above 4Ghz according to the spreadsheet
Is the Heat!! The majority have conventional air cooling and 3.8 is what we are limited in terms of temp wise.

Ok this was it. Call my processor dead. Died while swapping my cooling paste. I did not do anything special but clearly it was still enough.

How exactly did you manage to kill your CPU with changing cooling paste? Did you apply too much or too little paste? Or did you not tighten it properly or overly too tight? What CPU cooler do you have? I would understand if you are using the stock cooler as sometimes it's hard to have the four prongs seated proper. Still, the CPU's thermal protection sensor should kick in if it ever gets way too hot.

I am using water cooling (Swiftech Apogee GTZ, 6 litre water reservoir etc...). I did not do anything special, everything went ok when changing the thermal paste. It just won't boot anymore. It's a big riddle to me. Nothing like this happened before in my 25 years of pc experience.

then you haven't experienced enough TIM changes in those 25 years

If you haven't already, pull it, clean everything with 99% iso and inspect your board for bent pins.

Not careful are we Holding my fingers but haven't killed anything with TIM changes out of probably 50 times.

lol I'm very careful, but I've also changed maybe 10,000 cpus in my day.

Did you swap your memory to different slots, the reason I ask is I know my old msi x58 wouldn't boot unless I installed the memory in the correct slots, no beeps no nothing like the board was DOA.

I didn't touch my memory before I had problems. Of course I did try different banks after the problems (with 1, 2 or 3 dimms). I just swaped my thermal paste, nothing more. Very strange.

Given that the memory controller is on the i7 chips, are we comparing apples and oranges when we talk about vcore requirements without using similar memory parameters (amount of ram, speed, and timings)? Or is it only the cpu vtt value and not the vcore that should differ with different memory configurations? I have come across a post or two suggesting vcore requirements can be decreased by downclocking ram.

Just wondering, as I have two supposedly "good" batch number 920's, one requiring 1.418vcore and the other 1.4625vcore to run stable at 4.0GHz with HT on and turbo off. I run both with 6 gigs of ram at 1600mhz with 8-8-8-21 timings. Just curious what ram configuration folks who run 4GHz stable at 1.3ish vcore are using.

(I realize chips can vary considerably even within the same batch number- just curious if memory might explain some of the differences in vcore requirements. Or maybe I'm just envious of the folks with better chips).

I'll be up and running in 1-2 weeks. A new mobo is ordered. It was tested as defective. The processor is still being tested. I expect it to be ok (as I figure that the problem is in 1 of the 2).
