Running Vista Ultimate, it's uptime is nearly 5 months if you take 2 reboots out of account. I never knew it was that good with low amounts of RAM




IIRC, Server 2k3 and Server 2k8 can both utilize very high amounts of RAM on x86-based systems.

one the board I modded last night and 3 new ones in a box upstairs..

Send one board here and we'll make TurboPLL into it, success rate is almoust 100% with that mod

One thing to always remember is that cpu prices drop like bricks EXCEPT the top one of each platform and that is why there are people asking huge money for a 3 year old cpu such as this.
Now the other side is that when I first started dealing in cpu's in mid 2004 these sold for $2500.00 each on ebay:

Oh darn it old man now i started to look for Quad socket 603 board and well those chips are cheaps as nothing, which is good thing

PAE - Physical Address Extension
It allows us to use a 36-bit memory access, 32-bits per process and 4-bits for paging. It means that we can technically get up to 64GB on a 32-bit platform!

It's available for free with Linux but you need Windows Server Datacenter Edition to take advantage of it in Windows. Technically Windows XP uses it to read the NX bit for DEP, but doesn't actively page anything out past 4GB - MMIO.

The 32-bit 4GB limitation is only per process, so it's not too bad. You could run a couple VMs, a database, and web server process and still have enough memory for everything.

I think the old Socket 8 Pentium Pro was the first to implement it.

I see.. I only know PAE from Asus mobos, helps you utilize a little bit more of your 4GB of Ram in good old XP 32

Still, I'll leave my Sammy running with 2x1GB. It's more than it needs anyway, 1GB was fine too, I just wanted dual channel on principle

Anything that wants or needs a lot of ram runs on the harpers o the i7 anyway, like hd video encoding and stuff (4GB per process wouldnt be enough here anyways without the program splitting it up more intelligently than it currently does...)

I'd go with either Server 2k3 or Server 2k8. 2k3 is a lot like XP, 2k8 is based on Vista.

I'm running Debian Lenny using the "bigmem" kernel.
Remember, the OS can use memory for buffering reads/writes as well, so it also makes sense for file servers.

Thanks, have a done a bit of reading now and looks like a good option for me to consider.

Tried taking that ground wire to the back of the board to ground on the 8 pin.. Same..

Took wire to back of board and tied it into the 3.3v line and it booted and is running but at stock 2000mhz..

So I said my last goodbyes to Sammy1 yesterday as I have shipped her off to see my brother at law school. Hope she makes the 2000-mile journey okay...

For now I'm down to just my Thinkpad until I get Sammy2 up and running.
