Digitimes is likely VERY wrong. RV740 is supposed to be the 40nm test, and 790 a conservative refresh.

I have not heard of ANY news regarding GT212 tapeout. It's a phantom chip as far as NOW is concerned. You don't NOT tape out a chip last year and "prepare to launch it" in Q2 2009, especially when it's your first 40nm chip, and it's still supposed to be big.

Yep good points there. All the chances are that RV790 is 55nm refresh and RV740 is 40nm ,like you said. As for NV part, who knows,Nv is one weird company ,but yeah Q2 2009 for GT212 is a dream.

I remember Digitimes claiming yorkfield is "native"(monolithic) QC part back in the day ,we know how that turned out

Adobe is working on Flash Player support for 64-bit platforms as part of our ongoing commitment to the cross-platform compatibility of Flash Player. We expect to provide native support for 64-bit platforms in an upcoming release of Flash Player following the release of Flash Player 10.1.

You're insulting quite a large bunch of people with that statement, I'd be more carefull with what you say.

If it turns out the RV790 is not just a higher-clocked RV770, you'll assume you're a fool yourself?

I'm just getting that "nvidia dominance" feeling, that's all.

Cant believe that ATI can just "rename" GPU as Nvidia does

I suppose they should delay, spend millions of dollars to design an entirely new architecture and chip just to appease those of you who are so against re-branding?

Realistically.. do you guys think that could ever be profitable? Do you expect that of car manufacturers? That they design the entire car from the ground up once a year?

Well the name's fine if it offers some 10% speedboost, NV usually don't even meet that and still keeps rebranding a card twice.

Doing "as nVidia does" would be for ATI to change the HD4870 to HD5870, without any hardware changes.

Atleast nVidia didnt remove performance doing renaming. Like on 1900GTv1 v2, 1950GT

What..now im an nVidia fanboy? Sorry I cant keep up with your flipflopping

Also you should start with the source if you wish to censor. Your own post aint helping either.

You just sound dissapointed since its just a tweaked core.

That's why it is still 48xx series.

If they had just increased the clocks and called it a 5870, THAT would be renaming. They do not gain any new customers by renaming it to 4890. Only those people who want the burning edge of high end GPUs will upgrade from existing 4870s.

ATI is trying to fend off the 285 and 295s with this release (and future higher clocked releases) in an effort to stall till R8xx arrives. This has been done many times before by ATI, is constantly done in the lower end, and is nothing new. If the price is right, people will buy it. (Note, I said price and not "price and performance" because there's no way this can beat a 285 unless we're missing something, but it will make it end up faster in applications where the 4870 was almost as fast as the 285)

Regarding performance drop, everybody has sins of their own, like 9600 GSO G92 edition vs 9600 GSO G94 edition, LOL.

    RV790 is an OCed RV770?
Last year AMD got a great turnaround with the help of RV770, but now it seems somewhat weak in front of NVIDIA GT200 Series. After NVIDIA’s partners pushed out their self-designed GeForce GTX260, the launch of GeForce GTX285 and GeForce GTX295 have made NVIDIA even more confident in this battle.

What move will AMD take to fight back? RV790 has aroused interest from lots of people as well as 40nm RV740. According to our source, RV790 will be named as Radeon HD 4970, with core clock improved to 950MHz (compared with 750MHz on HD4870). The memory clock keeps unchanged as 900MHz (i.e.3600MHz GDDR5). Based on 55nm manufacturing process, RV790 will come with 800 stream processors just as RV770, not 960 ones as rumored.

With massive 27% improvement of core clock, RV790 may target at GeForce GTX285. Maybe you would think AMD is confusing us on purpose like what they did to RV770, but the informer believe there won’t be much change in specs. The availability and pricing of RV790 are not disclosed yet, but hardware-info says it would be announced in April........

Is the 950Mhz core clock going to be standard vanilla version or is it the OC version clock speed?

    Also will there be a 4890 OC x2 ?!?!
