Gulftown is single socket high end desktop?
I thought the "___town" naming convention was for 2 socket workstations (Harpertown, Gainestown, etc...)
I thought the "___field" naming convention was for 1 socket desktop (Kentsfield, Yorkfield, Bloomfield, etc...)

I think I finally found an upgrade from my Q6600 that makes complete sense! GULFTOWN! 6 cores, each using hyperthreading!! I'm down.

not bad for a ~100$ cpu... but i still think i7 will be a lot more attractive than i5 to end users...Westmere key features
Intel® Hyper-Threading technology (2 Cores, 4 threads)
4MB cache, Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) – 2ch DDR3
I can tell you what I;d do with it. It would be a folding beast when the computer is not being used by me. When it was, it would be used for the ultimnate benchmarking, video encoding, flow modelling, solid gold CPU of the Universe Rig. I would even add to the wormholes I currently own and network them.
I would promise to be careful though. We wouldn;t want any accidents with these wormholes...it could potentially swallow the Earth and that would disrupt the natural order of things. The Continuum wouldn't like that.![]()
Ha,I told u guys to skip Nehalem completly, t seems you have a choice to buy no-upgrade-in-the-future i5 or expensive i7.
No mainsteam quadcore is step backbut hey ! we got AMD now.
Also I wouldnt jump on 6core i7 because like 1 year later 8core Sandy Bridge will come out with new architecture.
I'm sticking to Q6600.No need to upgrade.
i5 is a mainstream quad. Plus C2Q. And who says you cant upgrade your i5 quad? Its just not gonna be with westmere.
And if you dont jump i7. Then when? 1 year after there will just be the next...and next and next.
And if you still got a Q6600. I dont see your issue with upgrading to something like i5 or an i7....its not like you upgrade alot.

Crunching for Comrades and the Common good of the People.
They apparently wanted to compare mainstream cpus but it is way too obvious that a tomorrow's platform with 2x more threads will easily beat today's platform in a multi-threaded benchmark![]()

...
So is "golftown" the successor of "bloomfield". Bloomfield is the current core i7 cpus correct? I'm not trying to be complicated, but this is just starting to get confusing. What 32nm quad core cpus are actually gonna be lga 1366 for the highend desktop line up? I looked at the chart, but just want to make sure.
Gaming rig
Mountain mods Plateau-18 -- Core i7 980x 4ghz -- Msi big bang x-power -- 6gb Mushkin redline 998691 ddr3 1600 (6-7-6-18-1T) -- Gigabyte GTX580SO (900/1800/1100) -- Win7 64bit pro
Heatware
why is that? trichannel is hardly useful in day to day applications.. even in video encoding. Lynfleld cost of ownership could half of that of i7 (Mobo+Ram+CPU).
--------------
SSD's price and issues with jmicron controllers might be settled by then by inhouse or other controllers... the timing for buying new PC is bad now imo.. unless you are willing to pay top dollar for stuff, that'll depreciate big time in 2 months.. like the price cuts of Intel SSD's recently.

there yo go bringing intel into a amd thread again lol, if that was someone droping a dig at amd you would be crying like a girl.qft!
Ahh thats too bad I was really hoping for a 32nm refresh of penryn.... it wouldve been my wildest dream come true!! (32nm 8600)
Something more about Westmere:
PCI-EX & IMC on cpu. Rumors says a little performance boost over core i7 on single video card setup (integrated pci-ex on cpu = less latency, but only 16 lanes are available)
CPU + GPU (a là fusion)
Cheers
Well, Intel's roadmap just decided my upgrade path for now.....skip i7 for the immediate future, upgrade my cpu to probably a Q9550/9650, call it even and wait for the 32nm cpus to hit.
