Well, the senior ATI tech that tried to help me was stumped. I updated him that I had tried HDMI and been able to run at 1920x1080 without the error, but the colors and contrast via HDMI were simply "off" and over-saturated. This is not an issue with the color settings. It is some kind of issue that the connection is causing. I have no idea what it is. Anyhow, I am experiencing underscanning when I run games via HDMI, but no underscanning when I'm using the benchmark utility. When I use the DVI connection, the refresh rate shows 60Hz, when I use HDMI it shows 59Hz. When I check "Information" in my monitor itself, it says 60Hz. When I use the BenQ monitor driver the "Maximum reported refresh rate" in CCC says 85Hz. When I use the default Windows monitor driver, the "Maximum reported refresh rate" in CCC says 75Hz.

I just got off of the phone with BenQ. We decided that I should try the monitor at 1920x1080 on a different machine, which I am going to do right now. They said that if the error happens with the other machine, I should send the monitor in for service. I'm not sure what to think about all of that. Anyhow, I'm going to try the other machine right now. I'll report back in 15 minutes or so.

My other machine doesn't meet the requirements for Vista so testing DX10 at 1920x1080 with this monitor on another machine is out of the question for me. I'm not sure what I should do next.

If DX9 is working just fine at 1920x1080, then how could this be an issue with the monitor?

it has nothing to do with the monitor then.

try complete uninstall of all the drivers and software; then remove the display adapters from device manager; restart; install Cat 9.1 non-beta.

Well, I guess trying that again wouldn't hurt. Here goes nothing.

I had that problems with some games. Limiting the monitor to manufacture's specs work. For some reason I have monitor 1280 x 1024 @ 75 but it detects it as 1980 x 1080 x 85 which cause all the games to default to that. I disable the EDID and set it manually to 1280 x 1024 @ 75 and it works.

I did a complete uninstall and reinstall of the drivers and I'm still getting the error. The benchmarking utility that I'm using is acting strange too and I'm getting some artifacts. I'm going to install 3DMark Vantage right now and see what kind of results I get with it.

Same results with 3DMark Vantage. It gives me the "Out of Range" error when I try to run it at 1920x1080.

It is the refresh rate you are trying to use.

Fix that via trial and error. Many people here are helping you.

    UPDATE!

I cleaned everything out with DriverCleaner (I bit and paid the $10) and reinstalled all of the ATI software and drivers. I attempted to run 3DMark Vantage at 1920x1080 and it gave me the "Out of Range" error again. I decided to open up CCC and see if it would let me mess with the refresh rate now without throwing a fit. It did. I was able to change the refresh rate from 60Hz to 59Hz and everything looked fine on the desktop. So I decided to try running Vantage at 1920x1080 again. To my utter shock and disbelief, it worked.

    BUT...

When it started running, the artifacts were absolutely terrible. I was getting maybe 15FPS. I am going to try running some games now and see what happens. I'm not sure what I should be doing next. I'm very excited, but I'm not going to celebrate just yet. The performance I saw in Vantage is unacceptable.

Some bad news. The problem is back.

After running Vantage successfully, I decided to try BioShock and found that 1920x1080 was working just fine where it had given me the error before. The next game I decided to try was S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky. This is where the problems started. I immediately received the dreaded "Out of Range" error after starting the game and I could not ALT+TAB out of it. I was forced to do a hard restart. Instead of a login screen, I was greeted with the "Out of Range" error. Whatever happened that made S.T.A.L.K.E.R. crash was still going on. I then rebooted and used the "Use last known good configuration" option. I was able to boot up just fine, but when I checked my desktop settings the refresh rate was back at 60Hz. When I tried to change it to 59Hz, the "Out of Range" error popped up. Once again, it is making me use 60Hz. Should I do an uninstall/reinstall of all of the drivers again, try to get back to 59Hz, and simply avoid S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?

No idea. I just tried using CCC to force 60Hz and I still got the error in 3DMark Vantage.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled (using DriverCleaner each time) the drivers and all ATI software a total of three times now and I cannot get it to allow me to switch to 59Hz refresh rate again without the "Out of Range" error coming up. This is so damn weird. For a split second there it seemed like I almost had the problem solved.

I'm calling it a night. I'll get back at it tomorrow.

Oh yeah, one more thing to add...

BioShock is still working just fine at 1920x1080 somehow, but 3DMark Vantage and World in Conflict won't run at 1920x1080. All three use DX10.

    WTFBBQ.

Well try using RivaTuner's Refresh rate override. Also if you can find another fullHD monitor, connect it to your PC and see what will happen.

hey matey, this might seem really simple but have you tried both card outputs?

its just i had a card that didnt play nice withe the second output (farthest from mobo) but would be fine i the output nearest the mobo.

have you tried this, also how about trying another DVI cable?

    Give this a try.....
Go to CCC/Monitor Properties/Attributes.....de-select 'Use Extended Display Identification Data(EDID)'.....then select 'Maximum resolution' as 1920x1200 and 'Maximum refresh rate' as 60hz.
Then go to Control Panel(right-click on desktop)/Personalzation/Display Settings/Monitor and de-select 'Hide modes that this monitor cannot display'....set 'Screen refresh rate' to 60hz and apply.
'Auto-set' your monitor through whatever procedure it requires. My Soyo has a one-button auto-set.....dunno about Benq.
    Worked for me........

After I install all the drivers and software that came with card, it asks me to reboot. When I reboot and get back into Windows, I am greeted by this error...

So it appears that the drivers that came with my card do not work it all. I am going to uninstall, use DriverCleaner, and try the 8.12 drivers now.

After I install the 8.12 drivers and software and boot into Windows, everything seems fine until I check Device Manager and see that there is a problem. Here is what is happening now with 8.12.

I have no idea what the problem here is or how to fix it. I guess I should just try going back to 9.1 now?
